Looking for some help on Immunosuppressants vs. Hashimoto’s

Hi,

Someone recently asked me in another forum whether or not Immunosuppressant Injections would have any effect, either good or bad, on Hashimoto’s and respective Antibody levels.

I’ve read up on this. I noted some conflicting info but for the most part have concluded that immunosuppressants are not effective in Hashimoto’s. What I cannot find out is WHY NOT?

Does anyone have any insight or links to reputable articles on this to help me understand why it’s used in some auto immune disorders but not in the case of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?

Anything would be useful that explains why it’s not used or indeed any side effects of using it for other conditions whilst you happen to also have Hashimoto’s would also be useful to understand.

Anyone able to shed some light?

This is an interesting line of thought and would appear very logical. Recently, in a fit of frustration I asked my GP what medics like Virologists and Immunologists were doing in their field for folk like me with Hashimotos and he just shook his head. Seems like we have to take the ‘law’ into our own hands regarding strengthening the immune system. As many know this can mean great effort for not much of a result. Such research by Immunologists on our behalf would certainly be a welcome addition to protocol and understanding of this disease.

Well, I take immunosuppressants for Psoriatic arthritis (I also have Hashimotos) and believe me, even if there were immunosuppressants for the thyroid, I wouldn’t take them lightly. These drugs are highly toxic and the side effects are as bad if not worse than the diseases we take them for! Also, suppressing our immune systems leaves us open to so many other infections and illnesses. They certainly aren’t an easy way.

Oh there’s no question there. I agree with that completely based on what I’ve read up on.

Most resources said that the risks of taking them outweighed any benefit seen in Hashimoto’s (because no benefit has been seen in the case of Hashimoto’s for the most part).

I’m still wondering why it’s seen improvements in some AI cases but not with this disorder though. It would be nice to understand the science is all.
