Importing meds

Just listening to Radio 4. Someone on there, I believe was director of Phoenix pharmaceutical s. Mainly it was re Brexic but said if they couldn’t resource enough particular drugs in UK they went abroad to order, routinely.

Why doesn’t that occur resourcing T3. ? I will get in touch(with them) later when I have more time.

There are several T3s available in the UK but the doctors wont prescribe on a 'named-patient basis' as there is only one that is 'licenced' in the UK. Doctors, if they prescribe and patient has a reaction they don't want the responsibility.

I agree Gcart, there is definitely something fishy going on with T3. Surely even the manufacturer of what the NHS does supply, has to source some of the ingredients from abroad. All very peculiar

GCart,

Presumably those drugs being imported are already licensed for UK use. If foreign manufacturers of Liothyronine apply for MHRA licenses GPs can prescribe them and pharmacies can import them.

Where the product is UK-licensed, then imports/exports are indeed common. I have read that there are specialists who re-package imported medicines to conform to the rules (e.g. must include UK PIL if a UK medicine).

The trouble appears to lie in the two areas:

The lack of acceptance of licences issued on other European countries (even though the Eurpean Medicines Agency has been working on this for many years).

The fact that UK doctors/pharmacists are alsways expected to dispense UK-licensed products when available and suitable.

Plus the fact that though there are the exceptions like liothyronine, cost is usually increased by importing - at least when done on a patient by patient basis.

Thanks for responses, looks like a dead end again ☹️ I didn’t realise the regulations that govern these things, guess it makes sense , just a shame that it’s the one we need . Moreover the hormone isn’t in itself expensive .😡
