Hi Fellow Thyroid peeps!

I'm quite new to this. I'll give a little history. As far as I know I had never had thyroid problems. I did however have hyperparathyroidism, the parathyroids sit behind the thyroid. There are usually 4 of them and they are very tiny. I was having lots of kidney stones and overall chronic pain. My bold work pointed to hyperparathyroidism. I found the best doctor in my area to handle this and he agreed I needed surgery to remove the bad gland. We my surgery did not go as planned. He removed 2 parathyroids and they test my blood in the OR to see if they got the right one. It did not appear that they did, so he removed half of my healthy thyroid thinking that it could have been embedded in my Thyroid and I believe he removed my thymus too. I was very disappointed to say the least. I've continued to have blood work since then & it still appears I have this disease. As time went on & my doctors were testing my Thyroid, my TSH was high, they didn't do anything about it for awhile but I came in with some symptoms, severe depression and air hunger. I was put on 50mcg of Levothyroxine. I feel worse since starting that, but my doctor says my blood looks good. I'm not sure where to turn. Unfortunately the surgeon that did my parathyroid surgery recently passed away so I can't go to have for help. I just asked my PCP for a referral to an open minded progressive Endocrinologist and a Psychiatrist for the depression. Has anyone here had worsening depression on Levothyroxine? The air hunger is awful too. My PCP did tests to rule out blood clots & a chest x ray which were both normal. I'm at a loss of what to do. I feel lower that I've ever felt in my life. Also should mention that I do have Fibromyalgia, migraines and in general chronic pain. Thanks for reading my post. Any positive feedback welcome.! Thanks

Welcome to the forum, SadieQ75.

If you post your recent thyroid results and ranges we will tell you if you are optimally dosed on 50mcg Levothyroxine. If you are undermedicated you could certainly have worsening depression and air hunger.

Sounds like you had a dreadful time with hyperparathyroidism. You may find this site helpful hyperparathyroid.org.uk/

Thank you for your response. I'm still quite new to all of this so I'm not sure what good numbers and bad numbers are yet. My #'s

TSH: 1.28

T3 Free: 3.3

T4 Free: 1.43

My TSH 4-5 weeks prior was 6.21. I didn't have T3 &T4 done st that time.

What do you think? I'm going to schedule an appointment with a new endo because I'm feeling so bad.

Could it possible be the Levothyroxine itself that is making me feel so terrible?

SadieQ75,

Do you have the lab ref ranges for T3 and T4 (the figures in brackets after results)? It's not possible to interpret results without them. TSH 1.28 indicates adequate dosing but if FT4 and FT3 are low a dose increase may be warranted.

It is possible that the brand of Levothyroxine you are taking doesn't suit you. Ask your pharmacist to dispense an alternative brand when you fill your next prescription. There are 4 makes in the UK, Mercury Pharma, Actavis (also known as Almus and NorthStarr), Wockhardt and Teva.
