2 weeks of strict diet of Iodine free. Then the Pill, sending home. Worried about my small dogs, 12lbs, one is 4yrs, and one 11. They sleep on my bed, every night. Should I board them or try to lock them in another room- very traumatic.
I'm told to stay in for 7 days with minimal contact with people. Dr. said don't let the dogs sleep with you the first 3 days, however being in the same room is ok. Every site I read has different protocols.

My dogs were 9.5 years old when I had high dose RAI almost 5.5 years ago. Vet said not to worry about them sleeping on the bed because they wouldn't live long enough to develop cancers if my radiation was high. He did say to try and prevent them licking me for a couple of weeks which I was able to do. They're 15 years old now and in relatively good fettle.
The nuclear physician said that by the time we are released from quarantine our radiation level isn't much more than normal background radiation. The precautions are against unknowns which may become evident in 30 years.
Will your dogs sleep outside your bedroom door if you put their bed there? That way it's not so traumatic for any of you. Our dog would sleep there even if we kept the door open he stayed in his place although we had to tut tut and send him back to bed a few times before he got the idea. It's not a bad thing for dogs to sleep a distance from you. Think of yourself as top dog leader of the pack and them as subservient. Thats the way it would be in the wild so it's natural to their instinct although they will feel replaced to begin with! Could you practice before hand to see if it could work?
