If it's RAI ablation it's definitely not a new treatment.

It must be rai!

Laser ablation is apparently another one but rarely used in uk, there are some posts about it.

This was gadgrantg original post

Can any one give information on thyroid ablation and if there are specialists who perform this operation in the UK? Would be pleased to hear of community experience of thyroid ablation, and also from folk who have had laser surgery on their thyroid. Thank you.

Its laser treatments for benign nodules.

Someone posted a year ago to say it was available in Harley Street but the Dr had only just started so not experienced and that is an issue.

I'm going to be pedantic and point out that "ablation" refers to "the surgical removal of body tissue", so thyroid ablation cannot refer to RAI which can be more accurately described as a chemical destruction of body tissue.

Sorry humanbean i know very little , i believe its for benign thyroid modules, sorry put this post originally for someone else but very interested myself.๐Ÿ˜Š

You have nothing to apologise for! I was just being pedantic as I said. :D

Well it's called RAI ablation by NCBI, BTF and a zillion others.

I didn't know that. But, in my personal opinion, it is still an incorrect use of the word "ablation". ;)

There is also cardiac ablation but they don't surgically remove the heart !

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply to bantam12

Well, yes, I know. But they do try to destroy or scar parts of the heart under surgical conditions.

Im out of my depth here. Ha so its iodine them!

RAI is short for "radioactive iodine". Someone with an overactive thyroid is told to drink the stuff. Iodine is collected by the body in the thyroid gland. Since in the case of RAI the iodine is radioactive it destroys or impairs the functioning of the cells in the thyroid gland, the idea being that the person will no longer have an overactive thyroid. It isn't a very precise science though, and many people end up needing repeat treatments or they end up over-treated and hypothyroid.

RAI ablation or Laser ablation, it would help if the person asking the question said which she was wanting info on, if it's RAI lots of us can respond but if it's Laser then I suspect very few can help.

Thankyou bantam, i will pass messages on to gadgrantg but she is nit answering at tbe moment- as i said im a little out of my depth. ๐Ÿ˜Š i will just stick to the simple stuff.

Rmichelle,

Radioactive iodine ablatement (RAI) destroys the thyroid gland usually causing hypothyroidism.

Radio Frequency Ablation (FRFA) can be used to shrink benign thyroid nodules.

There is alcohol ablation for hot nodules but it is mostly popular in the USA not sure who's doing it in the UK. They basically inject alcohol into the nodules without anaesthetic
