Thyroid ablation

Can any one give information on thyroid ablation and if there are specialists who perform this operation in the UK? Would be pleased to hear of community experience of thyroid ablation, and also from folk who have had laser surgery on their thyroid. Thank you.

I had this as an NHS inpatient, with radioactive iodine as part of my cancer treatment.

What are your circumstances?

I'm happy to answer any questions. What would you like to know?

I had my treatment for cancer, so it may be a little different. I had two surgeries and a RAI scan before my inpatient treatment.

I believe the laser treatment is relativley new? did you ask for the laser treatment as i think it is done only privately at present, thats what i was told so bit shocked nhs done it?

Yes, I'm talking about thyroid ablation with radioactive iodine.

• in reply toSilverAvocado

Hi Silver Avocado - that's interesting about radio active iodine - and thyroid ablation - with surgery.

I did not know about this treatment but was looking for a method used in the US where light is used to neuk the nodules and cells with thin fibres which are thread through the thyroid. I saw it on wikapaedia. I don't know if we do it here because we are light years away from Us research into thyroid disease and management.

I know laser surgery is private because my dad was offered it where he lived in the south E.

he had a socking goitre which he was told could be removed in a few minutes, so the anaesthetic would only be for short time the recovery time is shorter too. It takes ages for many people to recover from surgery and the nhs is not fussy about cosmetic effects.

Thanks for info.

• in reply toRmichelle

Have looked it up under wikaepaedia - a needle is put into the nodule or lesion using ultrasound to guide the needle with optical fibres which have a light which neuks the nodules. Don't know if hospitals use this technology in the uk asiit only requires a local anaesthetic.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling. Can you ask an administrator such as Louise Roberts for information through private message service as I can't send a private message unless someone e mails me privately first. If you send me a private e mail I might be able to

open it but not sure if I can since I have rejoined . My popularity is so great I have to rely on you to send me a message!!

Hi tech genius -marou on post on nodule removal

gave info on site for recommended private surgeons

endocrine surgeons.co.uk - that was four years ago

have logged on to web page _it looks bonafide.

Rmichelle• in reply to

I will have a look at that too. Did pop into docs today to see if results through but no yet. From hi tech.x

• in reply toRmichelle

It is private but the other type of treatment with ultrasound is with fibre optics with Laser light. As mentioned laser surgery was available over 7 years ago by s private specialist but there was no radioactive ablation. My dad was in his late eighties when he was offered the private surgery.

I take it you havent received pm? I will wait for you to reply before i email louise roberts. Speak to yiu soon.xx

• in reply toRmichelle

No pm - don't know how to correct it - someone had a list

on a post of endocrine surgeons but can't remember their name - there might be someone who does this method using laser light and ultrasound, to operate on nodules on this endocrine surgery - the term thyroid ablation usually means radioactive treatment and surgery not use of needle and ultrasound which is common in the us but not here. This was not the same list as loui robs indicated. Will try and find it.

There is alcohol ablation for hot nodules but it is mostly popular in the USA not sure who's doing it in the UK. They basically inject alcohol into the nodules without anaesthetic

Found a useful gluten free cornflakes biscuits baguettes pasta make online with Rowlands chemist",Glutafin Do you get free prescriptions?

I have a bread maker which has recipes for use

with self raising flour but you may get gluten free flour on online.and buy dried yeast, in tins or sachets in supermarkets. I use dried milk powder

in my bread as it is lighter but you have to weigh

the amounts and be careful not to mix the yeast

with salt, as the bread won't rise.

Supermarket brands of oats including Quaker might say they are gluten free, but health gurus say there are likely to be traces of gluten. If you find your symptoms are not resolving it may be the firms making the foods you like might be using a wholesale base that might contain traces of gluten.

• in reply toRmichelle

Does louise know what sort of abaltaion ie with laser light guided by ultrasound?

Haven't had a chance to look at endocrine surgeon list of what their specialties are -

Hope the breathless problem has improved.

Read a post from experienced researcher who is researching vagal nerve damage or irritation which is connected to swallowing coughing and breathing -

she recommends splashing the face with cold water to get the vagal nerve to act which can stop

anxiety - similar to putting cool water on a cloth on your neck - an old tip from my mum was to put a cold key on the back of the neck for nose bleeds -

this has to be connected to one of the facial and cranial nerves - but cold water on the face might be better.

Hope you like this week end tit bit.

Rmichelle profile image
Rmichelle• in reply to

Ha yes i look forward to your snippets, a few weeks ago i felt almost human again and the breathlessness had improved but then took a nose dive when my bloods sort of hit a lower level and endo started titration dose od 10mgs and i was back to square one, palpitations. Breathy, tiredetc, slight swallowing problems, so after being on new dose for 3 weeks i decided yesterday to go and get bloods done as i lnow im probably still over medicated and that is what is causing the problems again. I also get discomfort in the neck area where the thyroid is- its lije a stabbing pain but i get my better days and bad days- but have to rest when i get the palpitations.

Funny enough before i was diagnosed with hyper and hashis i read that article on the woman with the vagal nerve and did try it for around a month every morning but sadly nothing.

I do believe the breathlessness is connected to the thyroid as so many other people on this site have it and air hunger.

Just waiting for ultrasound results and see whats what- i am going to leave it till dinnertime then ring.

How interesting about the key on the back of the neck for nosebleeds but did it work. Thevonlybone i know is the gold ring rubbed over a sty.😊 do you want me to email louise roberts and what shall i ask?

• in reply toRmichelle

That's interesting about the blocking and dosage -

As for the gold ring over the sty have found an

antibiotic cream for the nose helps with sties.

The linings of the nose and and eyes are closely linked. This was prescribed by the Queen's doctor

nhs practise!!! in Scotland

but no one else where I live seems know much about ENT and sties..Another tip is to make a solution of Johnson's baby shampoo, of one part in five and bathe your eye lids top and bottom with it.

Other GPs say put hot swab on the sty to bring up the pus but I find the solution with johsons baby

shampoo. is more soothing - as I have allergies

I use a weaker solution of 1 in ten.

As you felt much better when your dose was the right level but are still getting pain in neck just hope

the ultrasound might show any impingement on nerve which is causing pain. Another useful

thing to find is to look at teaching hospitals in London with specialists who might know about this laser ablation. - we have specialists from Whiston hospital coming to Wales - so you might find specialists from London ore elsewhere coming

to your hospital. Very often specialists do both nhs work and private work but you should get the specialist rather than a registrar or locum trainee privately Glad you mums cats are enjoying sitting on the bed. My cat has a clever routine of jumping up on a table and knocking everything off it including the lamp! She knows as soon as she starts scrabbling and scuffing paper and debris she will find her flunky rushing to the food bowl.

Who says cats aren't intelligent?

You can e mail Louise to ask if there are any specialists who do laser ablation with ultrasound on her list.x

Rmichelle profile image
Rmichelle• in reply to

Hi there. What is the antibiotic cream then? Im having a nice cuppa in a minute now its been 1 hour since taking carbimazole split dose.

My mum does the johnsons baby shampoo bathe every day as she has blephatis and swears by it.

Just waiting for ultrasound and bloods now to see if dose is to highbas ladt time my t3 was looking more hypo. Going to see paddington bear tomorrow- so i wont be doing alot just resting.

Cats are very intelligent but also think of theirselves alot.xx

Naseptin - new Paddington film sounds fun - love the first one. Looked at list of consultants in

Midlands the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Edgbaston

NHS choices gives list of surgeons - Mindlesohn Way Birmingham - there is a postcode list of hospitals near your postcode.Read that the London consultant expert has done over 10,000 ops on thyroid - his methods are non invasive and

there is minimal scarring on the thyroid - patients only stay a night then go home. He also does path up work from lesser hospitals who have done balls up!

They don't cut the neck, so that's why patients don't have the trouble of waiting for scars to heal.

Janet and John from Birmingham look like good options at main hospital in Brum on endocrine list.

Not far on a train to London - could stay in B&B

near facilities for a few days - loads of tourists do it

- think it's a shame people who want some certain type of surgery which is not in their area may have difficulty in obtaining it as micro surgery is not a regular option on NHS. You'll have to wait for your results - keep fingers crossed you'll hear soon.

Rmichelle• in reply to

Morning gadgrantg thankyou for taking the time to do research for me and i really do like to r ead what you have found.

I thought about chasing scan results yesterday over the phone but thought i may get a receptionist reading the results over the phone and getting incorrect, so i am going to go on monday afternoon and that way i can chat to doc if needs be- in a way im certain i have nodules but same way i hope it is clear!! Ha.

Its pouring down here and grey not a nice day at all.xx☔☀

• in reply toRmichelle

Quite right - sounds if you had a few days when you felt better then someone altered your dose .

Are you taking levothyroxine? Is this what is causing you to swing from hyper to hypo or is it a hashi flare which can be controlled with a completely free gluten free diet, which is for your coeliac disease too ? Hoped you liked film -

are you a fan of the x factor ? Poor old Simon

falling down the stairs - with a cup of cocoa - he might have looked more stylish with a gin and tonic!

Weather here been ok - surprisingly dry - but heavy showers. Finding the older I get the less I know - research is a way of convincing myself I have control - ha!

Rmichelle profile image
Rmichelle• in reply to

I on carbimazole 10mgs now and do have hashis. I know my dose is not right.

Ha yes i watching xfactor, had to laugh when you said that- what got me though is when he arrived home the press took photo of him and his shoelaces were undone- he could have had another trip with that.simon does need to stop having his face plumped out with fillers!!

We are going tomorrow instead as my hubby worked till 3pm today and we try to do things together at weekends, so paddington tomorrow and a drink at costa. Hubby cooke a lovely chicken dinner tonight i waffed it down- i put out a new post about 1 hour ago i keep getting cold sores- i use zovorax it burns them off. 3rd one in 3 weeks. 😨😨
