Hair breakage falling out

Good morning im taking levothroxyine 50 mcg and hear lately my hair has been coming out everytime i just rub my hands through it please i need help what could be the problem and what could i do to stop the breakage.

Hello and welcome.

What you need to do for posters to give you good advice is obtain and post your TSH, Free T4 and free T3 results if you have them plus the ranges. If you don't have them then ask your surgery for them as under the Data Protection Act 1998 it is your right to have them. if you have the results and ranges from ferritin, folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin D tests plus thyroid antibodies also post these.

In future make sure you get a copy of all blood tests you have for your own records mainly as GPs often miss things that can be vital and you need to be responsible for your own health.

In general if you are not properly medicated on thyroid hormone replacement PLUS your nutrient levels are not optimal then unfortunately you should expect hair loss and brittle nails. This is because hair and nails are not vital organs so if there are hormonal problems and/or nutrient problems then these are the first things the body decides to shut down proper growth.

With hair once your hormones and nutrients are optimal then it takes 3 months before you will see hair growth. There are other factors that cause hair loss but these are the common ones for those with thyroid issues.

Try not to worry Lynn. My hair was thinning terribly and my middle parting just kept on getting wider and if I lifted my hair at the sides it looked so sparse. I started to get really miserable about it. However, once I got all my levels up, slowly but surely it all started growing back. Just a bad memory now which I won't let happen again by keeping a close eye on all my levels.
