Off sick again

I'm not off sick from work that often but tend to catch everyone's cold. When that happens I'm really poorly; much more poorly than the people I catch it off.

I have Hashimotos and wondered if there's any evidence anywhere that suggests people with auto-immune conditions are more susceptible to germs in general?

I generally keep myself healthy, take lots of vits, eat well, exercise etc but then get more sick than the people I catch germs from. Seems a bit unfair 😣

Padster7, i am hashis and cealiac and i catch anything going around at work and when my daughter is poorly, whilst my husband will not get anything, i was told by my gastro consultant that if you have a auto immune disease you will be more suseptable to bugs etc. Hashis does come under the disability act, my workplace as looked into this and apparently they have to allow there will be times that people with immune diseases will be off more than others!!

I think it's more to do with optimal T3 than autoimmune. I have Hashi's, but during the years my T3 was high, I didn't catch anything. My T3 has been low, lately, and I caught two bugs in the past month!

Ooh that's interesting. My T3 has been low recently, I believe due to stress. I've been increasing my vit c intake to counteract this but it may not have made any difference.

You can't really counteract low T3 with vit C. It doesn't work like that. You need both.

My endo would never prescribe t3 though so I need to develop other strategies to cope with stress. I thought vit c was helpful for adrenals during stressful periods.

Well, yes, Vit c is good for adrenals at all times. But it can't replace T3. If your T3 is low, and you don't convert very well, then you need to take T3. And, whilst low adrenal function can cause poor conversion, it's not a simple as just taking vit C. You can only replace a hormone with a hormone, not a vitamin.

Thanks greygoose. I do generally convert well and my FT3 is usually higher. That's why I'm puzzled. Thanks for your help.

You might try checking your recent viramin/mineral levels. Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as an increased susceptibility to infection. Also iron deficiency anaemia.

I've noticed as well increased exposure to chemicals/toxins/bacterias/stress can trigger it too. I lived in a flat for about 10 months with a hidden mold behind wardrobes and during that time I was catching every cold or infection around me. I even developed an abscess out of nowhere and another bacterial infection. They were so angry with me as I was calling sick every month. I only realised that mold was there when I decided to move furniture around. Moved out of the flat soon after and had only an usual cold once a year.

Thanks Gr8Nica. I have bloods done every 6 months and the last ones July 17 were good apart from low FT3. My ferritin has climbed to over 80 from starting at 14 and B12 was halfway in range together with Vit D a bit over range. I've been taking 2g of vit C daily plus a berocca some days. My colleague at work started with a cold and I think I picked this up after hers ended but mines worse than hers was. Hopefully it won't stay long 😐

Then the only thing I can suggest is when the weather starts to get worst or people around are getting sick you can drink 3-4 teas a day with echinacea, astragalus or a combination of fresh ginger, lemon and manuka honey to avoid getting sick. It might help or at least minimise the symptoms.

Hi all i have had a occupational health telephone interview with work just and she has just stated to me that if you have a auto immune disease you will be poorly alot more especially in the first 16months or so and work as to make allowances for this. It does come under the list of disabilitiez- i now have 2 immune diseases so im always catching something.x

Thanks everyone I've just seen a doctor at the walk in and I've got an ear infection. Feels like my ears are completely blocked. Starting on anti-noise so I hope it clears up quickly. Thanks for all the advice xx
