Looking for some advice
Is that stop levothyroxine and replace with something else? Or stop levothyroxine get progressively more hypothyroid and potentially cause long term damage to organs and for some people slip into a hypothyroid coma and die?
Levothyroxine is a replacement hormone, every cell in the body needs thyroxine to metabolise and function correctly. It is true that not everyone feels well on levothyroxine but this is often due to undertreatment or deficiencies in vitamins and minerals which mean the body can’t use the hormone properly.
There are some very knowledgable people on this forum. Please post again giving more information including history, dose of medication and any recent blood tests and your major problems and perhaps someone can help.
Yes, that's exactly it!! My Mum was advised to stop her Thyroxine for 6 weeks by her GP as her levels were too high & then have her levels re-checked. & My Mum did end up in a coma & ended up on a ventilator for 6 weeks! So, I am obviously looking for evidence to state that Thyroxine should never be stopped & always reduced.
Could it be she has Hashimotos and was having a flare that caused the results to appear Hyper ? What tests did she have that indicated her thyroid levels were high ? If they did not test the FT3 then there are serious implications. Just looking at the TSH is a HUGE mistake when making such big decisions as stopping the Levo/T4.
My Mum was diagnosed about 10-15 years ago with an overactive Thyroid. She received the Iodine Treatment which then made her Underactive. She was having her routine year bloods taken & the only did the routine bloods FSH & T4 her levels where TSH - 0.01 & her T4 - 27.4.
yes - the FT4 appears to be over range - ( without the ranges it is difficult to comment accurately ) - however without the FT3 result ii is still difficult to assume she was over medicated. She could have conversion issues - thus making the FT3 low in range - if so then she was not over medicated
That's useful to know, they should have been testing her T3 aswell. It would be really useful to get this evidence so I can take the matter further.
Private testing in the home available from Blue Horizon or Medichecks through ...
Tests required - TSH - FT4 - FT3.
The only way you could even consider this would have to be under medical supervision (in my opinion) because there must have been a serious reason for prescribing it in the first place.
I radically improved my overall health (nutrition, fitness) and was able to reduce my requirement for thyroxine, as I was becoming hyper on the original dose, but I am still having regular blood tests and consultations with a knowledgeable GP. Just my experience - others here know more and I look forward to reading their responses.
