I was on medication for Graves 8 years ago - after 2 years I was taken off the meds and stayed in remission for 6 years. I had some mild symptoms recently then a blood test last week which indicates a return. The GP I saw wants to wait 3 months then redo the blood test but I want to go on medication now as I had TED last time with swelling and aching eyes and I'm already waking with swollen eyes this last week....I feel that getting on medication now might help prevent worsening symptoms. I also feel the GP (who is new to me) lacks confidence so considering tracking down my old GP I saw 8 years ago. Please share your thoughts on my situation

I'm lying awake with mild symptoms of anxiety wondering if my graves has returned! I've been in remission for about 2 years. Thing is, about six months ago I was feeling a bit anxious and wondered the same. I had a blood test and my results were over range, although not by much. My gp got in touch with the endocrinologist and the plan was to start treatment for graves again. However, in the meantime I had another blood test was tending towards below range i.e. Hypo, and my hyper symptoms had gone! So the plan to start treatment was aborted and the endo queried that I had had thyroiditis. I was glad I hadn't started treatment as I would have assumed the tablets had caused the hypo results and would have been on tablets needlessly for some time. So confusing though. 3 months is a long time for you to wait though. Why not suggest 4 - 6 weeks, unless symptoms get really bad and then I'd want to be treated as soon as. As I say, I can't sleep and feeling pretty jittery right now. I can only wonder what the heck my thyroid is doing now!
Thank you for your reply. I might go and discuss my options with my previous Dr and see what he thinks. I'm sorry to hear you have anxiety it is horrible and definitely can be thyroid related. I've been practising mindfulness which helps. I hope everything works out well for you
Why not ask for an endo referral - it will probably take that long to come through anyway. In the meantime, if symptoms seem to be getting worse rather than better, you could ask to be put back on anti-thyroids.
Edit oops, just realised this was an old post, hope you are sorted now Cait58!
I went back to my old GP that I saw 8 years ago and he put me back on neomercazol and referred me to my previous endo though I can't get to see him until January. My blood test results were sent to the endo and he increased my meds to 10mg twice daily. My eyes a still gritty and a little puffy when I wake but nothing like they were a few months ago. I am about to have another blood test so interested to see if there's any change.
