Grandson's TSH level.

My Grandson age nine has recently put on a lot of weight 1.5 stone in a couple of months. As I and my daughter (his Mum) are both hypo. she took him to the Doctor and he tested his TSH which has come back at 1.6 range 0.35 - 4.7 and of course told it was fine.

Just wanted to ask for comments as I do not know how the levels are for children.

Symptoms he has been getting are tummy pain and some diarrhea.

He has also been tested for celiac as his Mum has it. We have not got that result back yet, but if he was celiac he would not have put weight would he?

Have you and your relatives had thyroid antibodies tests? If you're positive for antibodies would it be worth his mum asking for those tests for her son?

my daughter is negative for antibodies, well the one they do at the Doctor's anyway, she has not had the other type tested.

When she had them tested she had been gluten free for four years as she was diagnosed celiac. This is maybe why her antibodies were low.

Both mine are high in range, one had crept up to just 2 points from top of range so I have now gone gluten free.

My sister is also hypo. (do not know about her antibodies) and I believe an uncle was HypEr.

My Grandson does not suffer from the typical hypo. symptoms, tiredness etc. in fact he has bags of energy, never sits still, it was this sudden weight gain we are concerned about, also his face looks puffy.

Well, it could be worth getting tested for thyroid antibodies if his mother thought it helpful because of the family history. At least he'd know whether there's any likelihood of developing thyroid disease in the future so he would know to get tested at intervals or if he felt unwell. Maybe wait to see if Coeliac is diagnosed first?

It sounds like you do need to look into what's causing his symptoms.

Hi Lucylocks I have just seen your post and wanted to comment. My son was recently diagnosed as coeliac after 4 years of being fobbed off, he too had gained a considerable amount of weight, so coeliac does not always present with weight loss.

I hope you have some confirmation regarding his problems soon, I am assuming that he has blood tests for gluten antibodies, ask to see the results and don't be fobbed off if you feel that further investigation is warranted.

I'm sure you already know this but your grandson should not avoid gluten at all whilst you are being tested for coeliac disease he should eat gluten containing products at least twice a day for about 6 weeks prior to testing.

Sorry to hear your son was fobbed off for four years. My daughter was told for a couple of years her problem was irritable bowel syndrome before she was eventually diagnosed with coeliac.

The Doctor has sent a blood test off for my Grandson and we are now waiting for the result.

It is interesting your son gained weight before diagnoses, I will tell my daughter to see the results and push for further tests as I understand the blood test is not always reliable and can give false negatives.

I hope your son has now settled on his gluten free diet.
