Low stomach acid

I am hypothyroid and also have a hiatus hernia so take lansoprazole for this. It's been suggested that this could interfere with my levo absorption so any advice would be great thanks.

Sometimes we don't have any choice but to take a medication that may interefere with levo absorption. Best thing is to take it at least 4 hours apart from thyroid meds and keep an eye on thyroid levels, check them 6 weeks after starting new meds and adjust accordingly. At least, that's what I would do, I'm just another thyroid patient.

Thank you that's what I do. I don't take any of my other medication until lunchtime in a hope there's no interaction. I was diagnosed with the hernia prior to the thyroid problem so was already on the medication.

You are correct and this is an excerpt:

"Taking these four may lead to you being “under-replaced” or hypothyroid on your current dose, meaning you may need more levothyroxine or Synthroid:"

Iron. If you are taking iron supplements, watch it. Iron binds to thyroxine, disrupting absorption and decreasing the amount of thyroxine available in the circulation.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). These are medications you take for reflux or heartburn like omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazole (Protonix), etc. Optimal levothyroxine absorption depends on a specific stomach pH and PPIs suppress acid production in the stomach.

With hypo we usually have low stomach acid anyway which we help by taking either Digestive Enzymes with meals, particularly containing protein, or Betaine with Pepsin. This is a link re Hernia:-

Thank you Shaws. I find it difficult remembering everything I read and think it's awful that it's the only way we can have a chance of getting help from the GP but with the help of everyone on here I'm trying. Thanks again.
