Is it possible that thyroid issues are caused by chronic vitamin or mineral difficencies?
The diet in the UK and USA is absolutely terrible, isn't it possible this is why we are ill?

KittyJump,
No, vitamin and mineral deficiencies bring their own problems but they don't cause thyroid dysfunction and many people in the UK and USA have extremely good diets but still have deficiencies and thyroid dysfunction.
90% of hypothyroidism is due to autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's) destroying the thyroid gland. The other 10% is congenital or due to central hypothyroidism, thyroidectomy, RAI or just idiopathic (unknown reason).
But isn't it true that
Hashimoto's can be managed with an auto immune diet? So therefore couldn't it be the cause?
U.K. And USA diets are full of junk food and E numbers and toxic chemicals....
KittyJump,
Auto immune diet may help some people manage Hashi's but why does that make you think vitamin and mineral deficiencies are causing hypothyroidism.
Many people eat a very wholesome and healthy diet, cooking from scratch. No one has to eat junk, E nos and toxic chemicals.
That's true, not saying everyone does but a lot of people do eat very badly....
Very few are even hitting the 5 a day and that is not what the human body really needs, if you have a car and fill it with vodka won't it break?
The Paleo diet might help with the antibodies - it might even reverse Hashi's, although I've never seen any proof of that. But what it won't do is repair the damage that has been done to the thyroid before diagnosis. So, you would still be hypo.
