Tendonitis - a possible cure for some...

I was googling on exercise and found some posts from this site from people who were suffering from some forms of what they called tendonitis, especially Achilles or wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome) and felt compelled to sign up and post this.

The cause can be something as simple as "Trigger Points" - which are essentially highly localised muscle cramps, often occurring in the middle of the muscle but which manifest as discomfort or pain at the ends where the attachments are, i.e. the tendons. Trigger points often arise when muscles are overworked or which are not used to exercise or sudden strains, or the type of repeated use which often gets diagnosed as repetitive strain injury.

For the Achilles tendon, this can be trigger points around the middle of the calf muscles, and which can be treated by yourself simply by rubbing the calf quite hard against your other knee, for example. I used to have this problem due to playing squash, until I found about about trigger points.

Similarly for wrist problems, the trigger points can occur in the middle of the forearm muscles.

There is a wonderful book called "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" by Clair Davis which I highly recommend, but googling Trigger Points will also give you lots of information.

Any muscle can experience these. Where these are the cause, you can treat them yourself with simple massage once you have tracked them down. Press the muscle firmly and where you feel a pain (and possibly even feel the small bump of the cramp) which is more than just the feeling of the pressure you are applying, that is a candidate for a trigger point. Massage it firmly for around 30 seconds, and repeat every hour or so, being careful not to overdo it as it can become sore.

I'm not saying these will necessarily be the cause of everyone's problems, but I am sure they will be for quite a few.

Google is your friend. :-)
