RCP Endocrine Conference Sept Covers T4/T3 'controversy'

Found this on Twitter, Dr Vanderpump is one of the speakers - excuse my ignorance as still picking up thyroid knowledge but have seen name mentioned on here.

rcplondon.ac.uk/events/upda...

Mention of T4/T3 controversy.

Anything we can do with this knowledge to support our aims???

How very interesting! Our team have produced upwards of 20 papers (climbing) with 3 in print that carefully explains in the fullest scientific detail, why the present regime of diagnosing therapy on T4 by TSH only is basically faulty. Indiividual diagnosis is essential regardless of biochemical numbers. Any invitations to join in the debate? Don't hold you breath. This is a nice cosy cartel that (put it politely) debates complacently within itself.

What about patient representation then? Is there a challenge? Is Healthwatch England in a position to ensure patient representation?

You cannot challenge a complacent jellyfish who is quite certain of their position regardless of fact. If the authorities want to disregard something that challenges their position then there is nothing one can do. There are three possibilities: 1) they haven't read the latest research: 2) they have read it and don't understand it; 3) they have read it, understand it but don't want to acknowledge it because it undermines their collective position. Until the old guard fade away little can be achieved.

I understand exactly what you are saying and I know that you know your stuff (not meaning to be rude but eloquence escapes me tonight). I have great admiration for your tenacity.

But I can't help but wonder if another approach might keep this headline going. Making some noise! Maybe in grass roots fashion.

Diogenes, please see my reply further down. I get the impression you may be able to get a seat there ?

If it were the case that the audience could actively participate it might be useful. However, I fear that sitting mute through a torrent of out of date nonsense would do harm to my blood pressure so I will duck out on this occasion.

Very understandable

Hi diogenes ,

Do you have a link for these papers produced by your team? Or, where can I find them if they are available? Thanks in advance.

Louise Roberts TUK has a lot of them on file so she could give you them.

None so blind as those who don't want to see diogenes . I think I would go for your number 2 suggestion.

Hidden Vanderpump is a turncoat, as is Toft. Both resigned from the NHS, both now working in private practice and offering their private patients T3 in addition to the standard fare.

Utter hypocrites the pair of them.

I understand the anger and my post wasn't meant to inflame that.

Perhaps I am naive as I'm a relative newbie but I'd hoped somehow we could make use of this conference and the subject matter being discussed to make some noise about our plight and use it to our advantage.

Okay so I dont have any great ideas but surely we have to make use of the opportunities we have to create a headline?

No?

Okay I'll go quietly☹

in reply to

Hidden sorry for my outburst, hangs head in shame.

I appreciate your good intentions and ITT could perhaps offer an olive branch by volunteering to speak at their conference in the capacity of an expert thyroid patient/s. Let's see how honourable their intentions really are!

Expert thyroid patient is a good idea. As I mentioned above, I wondered if Heatlhwatch England was in a position to assist in terms of advocating for patient representation?

in reply to

It looks like more of a sit and be talked at type of thing. I.e CPD for GPs and health workers. There is an agenda which can been seen in the link.

Oh well, everyone in their own little silos carries on.

It would be interesting to see who is sponsoring the event, never known medics to be without a free lunch, and also whether we could have a stand with expert patients in foyer etc. Often these events attract interested parties to sell/persuade. Not a doctor so don't know the score for this but in my world we often had companies selling equipment and software etc have stands outside the conference room, usually paying heavily for the privilege.

Edit: patient groups and charities have also been present.

As this event is being marketed as a CPD event, are there any health professionals on the forum who could attend? It may be that there could be some seeds of change contained in it. Just the sort of event which may change some health professionals views, which is what we want.

Mary.

in reply toMaryMary

Great thought. I hope there is someone on the forum able to do so.

We need to SOMEHOW get at least one representative from HU into that conference. Looks like it's a fairly closed shop though. We at least need to hear what information they are spouting. Any nurses, medical students here?
