Confused

I was diagnosed with overactive thyroid and graves.im not on any medicine it all makes me sick.I have even tried radiation but it didn't work.im confused on why it didn't work. Could someone explain it to me

What meds have you tried and for how long ? When did you have the RAI ?

My doctor didn't put me on any medicine and I had RAI in 2015 she keeps telling me it's going to work and now wants to go in and remove part of my thyroid

So you haven't taken any anti thyroid medication at all ? The normal treatment is tablets for 18 - 24 months and then try for remission, if that fails then surgery or RAI are an option.

To go straight for RAI is a little unusual but if you are overactive again then your dose from 2015 has not worked. You either need another dose of RAI or surgery.

Not sure your doctor knows what she's doing so think about changing !

No i haven't taking any medicine she went straight to radiation. Now im scared to have the surgery.I was told I would be on medicine for the rest of my life. Im looking for another doctor to try to help me

Are you being treated by a GP or have you been refered to a hospital consultant ?

I think it's best to find another Endocrinology Doctor for second opinion. It's safer to take Antithyroid medicine than going into RAI again. RAI has some risk. I believed surgery is last option. It's up to you. I do wish you well.

Very surprised doc hasn't given you medication, it's dangerous not to be on any medication. Would definitely get a 2nd opinion. This is the 2nd time I've been diagnosed and currently on high dose of carbimazole. Now taken the plunge and booked in for RAI over the summer but feeling nervous. Specialist has told me 2-4 weeks inscolation! Had long did you stay away from people?

Stepheccles it's not 2-4 weeks of isolation, the usual advice is up to 2 weeks of keeping an arms length from young children and anyone who's pregnant. It has a very short half life of around 4 days and each day the amount of radiation given off reduces and it's only a minute amount anyway. I carried on as normal after I had mine just followed the advice with my young kids, I still did the school run, cooking and so on.

Stuckey ........RAI and SURGERY ... are irreversible !

there are other methods to become Euthyroid ... i managed it about a year ago and i am planning staying that way . I took Carbimazole

until i got my blood results right didn't take that long , surprisingly and then started replacing all of the minerals, vitamins and nutrients that Graves had taken from my ravaged body, replacing all of these helped balance my Immune system , which was actually responsible for attacking my otherwise healthy Thyroid Gland.

Please think very seriously before you try RAI again ... or surgery . I was told that was my only option. but i was not prepared to throw away my chance at restoring my health. i have watched many of my Family members become very illl indeed with Thyroid disease , and now irreversible damage because of neglect and ignorance from doctors and medical staff.

It is not too late to change things around and become well again , I was very ill indeed with Graves and now I am feeling great and I thank God i empowered myself with knowledge .....learn all you can about Graves

and take as much professional opinion online as you can find on the subject .. this is the rest of your life you are contemplating.. be wise and be strong .
