Hiya,

Can you still use the gym when you have hyperthyroidism? Iv stopped going since I got diagnosed in Jan with over active thyroid? I feel so lazy. I would like to go back again.

Hi Lauren. When I was diagnosed with hasimotos thyroiditis and in the hyperthyroid stage I couldn't exercise and wasn't allowed to by my consultant. If your hyperthyroidism is under control and you get the all clear by your specialist then you could return. It was the treadmill that highlighted my condition in the first instance, my throat and chest felt as though they were on fire, I couldn't breathe properly. I then sought medical help and got my diagnosis.

Hope that helps

I have graves disease and was diagnosed in May 2015 . I am on carbimazole but now on a low dose. My t3 and t4 are in the upper end but now in range . I got the ok from my endo to start exercising and I have been doing so for the last six weeks . I feel much better for it . I have been doing low impact hit workouts . When I was first diagnosed my t4 was 86 (10 - 26 ) and I could hardly get upstairs . My advice would be to start slowly and get permission from your endocrinologist . Hope that helps .

I was on 40mg carbimazole, was at the hospital last week and my levels have went to 9 from 25, so on 10mg now.

I forgot to ask about the gym I'm back at the specialist in august. Would love to go back to the gym

What's the range (the figures in brackets)? In most UK ranges, you'd now be under range for T4 and therefore due for a reduction in carbimazole, but I don't know much about hyper. Could you contact the endo's secretary and find out about execising, as Aug is a long way off?

I was on 40mg now they have changed it to 10mg only been a weeek since Iv been on the 10mg. I will need to ask about the gym even if I take it easy. I feel so lazy and tired all the time

You'll probably feel less tired now your dose has been reduced.
