Help! Hair loss with Graves' disease

Hi, please could you help me as I'm really worried about hair loss. I was diagnosed with Graves' disease in march this year and now on 20 mg Carbimazole and Propranaolol. For the past week I have noticed hair loss, especially after washing hair and then brushing when wet. It is getting quite significant. Is this bcause of the Carbimazole or because of the Graves Disease and is there anything I can do to stop it? I'm getting so fed up of this disease, it seems to affect everything 😔 Not seeing endo for 3 more weeks. Thank you

When was the last time you had your bloods checked? Hair loss can be a result of a number of different factors. In terms of thyroid function it usually associated with being hypo.

I experienced severe hair loss last year about a 1/4-1/3 of my hair fell out I was hyper at the time and under severe stress. I also have psoriasis which has flared up so my hair still hasn't fully grown back. I was told unequivocally by the endo and dermatologist that my hair loss had nothing to do with my thyroid :-/ I take PTU as I had a few side effects with carbimazole

Hi DoubleM, many thanks for your reply. I last had bloods done 4 weeks ago and my T4 was raised at 27.8 (12-22) and I think I still feel hyper, feel shaky like I did at the start etc. I've never had this before and am sure it must be due to medication or Graves. Don't think it's worth going to my GP, he doesn't seem to know much about Graves' disease!

Sadly, they don't!

Anemia can cause hair loss and having Graves (and as your levels are still high) your body doesn't get the chance to absorb nutrients from food very well. How is your diet?

It would be worth asking GP for a full iron panel.

I try to eat a balanced diet with the odd takeaway thrown in! I will ask the gp for the iron panel. Thanks so much for your reply.
