One of my last GP practices (not the cr*p one I left) wouldn't do private prescriptions. I heard an argument between one of the female GP partners and a patient on the phone about it. The GP had a habit of repeating the patient to confirm what the patient was saying.
So I think it is GP dependent as they are still regulated by the GMC.
