Moytjie,

Has your specialist said you need a fine needle aspiration or surgery?

CLutter a needle biopsy... how am I going to breathe or swallow if they inject me with solution to numb the pain of the biopsy?

Moytjie,

If you are injected with anaesthetic it will only be to numb the area where the biopsy needle goes in. It won't affect your breathing or swallowing.

I had a fine needle aspiration biopsy. The procedure is not painful but it is a little uncomfortable lying with your throat thrust upwards for the procedure. After I was given a gauze pad to press hard against the site for 20 minutes to reduce bruising and swelling. There was some bruising and stiffness of the neck for a few days after but nothing that paracetamol couldn't deal with. If I had driven to the appointment I would have had no difficulty driving home again.

Moytjie,

No, I don't know.

Whatever else you do, make sure to breathe deeply as often as you can as a constriction in your throat can cause shallow breathing which results in pneumonia.

As any thyroid operation entails dangers, no surgeon will be prepared to operate unless the situation is quite serious, at which point you will lose all reservations and fears of undergoing any operation as long as it relieves the problems.

The most likely cause is a simple benign expansion of the thyroid for whatever reason, a goitre of some sort, cancer is unlikely. There are some marvellous surgeons out there, they saved my life 3 times. I have very different opinions about GP's and endocrinologists.

Thank you so much Panda what speciality field surgeon please?

in reply toMoytjie

If it gets as bad as mine did, then you really need a thyroid specialist. A general surgeon at local hospital attempted to remove my multi-nodular goitre and it was too much for him. Sewed me up and sent me home to suffer several more months before a complaint to the hospital PALS resulted in me getting to a bigger hospital and a surgeon who afterwards told me it was by far and away the most complicated op he had done in his entire 13 years experience. I am for ever grateful that the local surgeon did not insist on continuing with an operation he felt unable to complete.

And then the troubles started................on levo with no thyroid gland, NOT recommended.

As you appear to be in South Africa, I doubt you would be able to get to this hospital in England to get the same surgeon, if and when an operation becomes essential.

See he is not a doctor?

In the UK health, those in the highest ranks, the consultants, surgeons and so on are referred to as Mr.

This shows their status, far higher than that of a mere Junior Dr.

I imagine they are paid a lot more as well!
