Hi Rosiedean
If your blood tests have shown thyroid issues then you kind of need it and not much choice in the matter. It is a hormone that replaces a hormone you are unable to make yourself and your body requires it to function properly. Sometimes when upping dose or starting, I do feel a bit off/jittery for a week or so but should calm down after as your body adjusts to the higher levels. I've had issues with certain brands also so if you have any side effects, just come back and let us know how you feel and we can maybe help
Also get your ferritin (iron), Vit B12, folate and vit D tested as these deficiencies are common with hypo issues. Just get a copy of your results from your GP and post on here for advice as GPs are a bit naff in these areas lol
HI Saggyuk, I noted your comment re different brands and wonder if you experienced problems withTeva? I normally pick up Almus brand and have no issues, but I was unwell for three months recently and it coincided with Treva. Now that I'm back on Almus I seem a bit better?
Iron was one of the things missing from my meds for a long time, until a sharp-eyed lab tech added a note to my lab report. It's alwaysa good idea to ask your doctor about stuff like that. Especially if they don't bring it up.
That's a normal start dose and I was fine when I had that years ago after partial thyroidectomy. But if you think you have any side effects look at the manufacturer and try a different one as some people may have sensitivities to a particular manufacturer. But don't worry most people don't have any bad side effects on such a small dose. If you are concerned it is too much it is the usual starting dose and you may well find you will need more.
Always good to have copies of your bloods with the ranges as you start your journey. Good luck.
Hi Rosieden, I have taken it for years and had zero side effects. It takes a few days to get properly into action in your system but hopefully you will see your symptoms improve gradually. What was your TSH?
Welcome to the forum, Rosieden.
There is a patient information leaflet in the Levothyroxine box which will list common side effects.
For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements, magnesium and oestrogen.
It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose. Symptoms may lag behind good biochemistry by several months.
You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.
Yes. I was taking that level when I was first diagnosed many years ago. Unfortunately, over the years my dosage was increased to keep the Hashimoto's under control. But while I was on it I had very good results at that level.
drugs.com/sfx/levothyroxine... 95% of people are fine but just keep an eye out for the suttle side effects
Major gas and stomach issues.
