Hi guys. : Have had under active thyroid for... - Thyroid UK
Hi guys.
Gizz Are you on Levo? What dose? Do you have thyroid antibodies?
Do you have your thyroid test results? If so, post them, with reference ranges, for members to comment. You are legally entitled to your results (if you are in the UK) so if you don't have them ask your surgery for a print out.
Have you had vitamins and minerals tested? It's very useful to have the following tested:
Vit D
B12
Folate
Ferritin
Us Hypos need optimal levels, not just in range, for thyroid hormone to work properly.
Always take your Levo on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food, with water only. Any other medication and supplements should be taken at least two hours away from thyroid meds.
Have you been retested since originally diagnosed? This should be done 6-8 weeks after starting Levo, an increase in dose of 25mcg, another retest 6-8 weeks later, another increase, etc, until you feel well.
When having thyroid tests always book the first appointment of the morning, fast overnight (water allowed) and leave off Levo for 24 hours (take after blood draw). Do this every time as continuity of conditions means that you can accurately compare results. Also, it gives the highest possible TSH which is what is needed when looking for an increase in dose or to avoid a reduction.
I am on 50 mg levo and. Just had another blood test I will ask for a print out when I receive results this may help I not managing my life like this
It takes time to build up to an optimal level of medication, patience is need I'm afraid, it can't be rushed.
Come back with your new results, hopefully you will get an increase.
The aim of a treated hypo patient generally is for TSH to be 1 or below or wherever it is needed for FT4 and FT3 to be in the upper part of their respective reference ranges if that is where you feel well.
Try to get the vitamins and minerals tested, they are important, and follow the advice about testing for future tests.
Right but I can really only follow my docs advice and I have other health issues and meds to take, so all that has to be taken into consideration.
I understand what your saying, I have followed the taking directions carefully and its different to what you say.
Thanks for info
Hi Gizz, I know there are many, many uncomfortable symptoms because your thyroid is in every cell in your body. It's important to know if you have Hashimoto's which is an autoimmune condition and not really just a thyroid condition. They can take antibody tests for TPO and THS to make a determination. If you have antibodies it means your immune system is being overwhelmed and that often means you have a gluten or dairy intolerance among other things. So it would be a good idea to know and take some steps yourself. This man is excellent in explaining.
Definitely get your Vit B12 and D, Folate and ferritin checked out also as I've had symptoms like yours when low in iron/vit d and most hypos are deficient in some of these anyway. Hope you feel better soon
I get what you mean as I was feeling like that for a couple of days since starting tablets last week, and aches and basically crap. We can moan at each other 😃
