As every cell in your body needs T3 produced from the inactive T4 then I imagine symptoms can be very varied plus if other things that help the Thyroid to work are low then that gives its own symptoms as well but I would imagine that extreme tiredness and brain fog would be up there. Many doctors could also be trying to 'cure' another problem and giving it a different name without realising the route cause is a thyroid problem.
Exhaustion, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, dry eyes, heart palpitations, dizziness, brain fog, depression, diarrhoea, joint pain, pins and needles, tight and full feeling throat, headaches, insomnia...All symptoms that I had for months before being diagnosed 😊
Lots of weight gain, digestive issues, dry skin, hair dry, fragile and hair loss, weak nails, swollen ankles, exhaustion, stressed, insomnia, loss of eyebrows. All symptoms better now after almost 2 years 😉
My main symptoms were weight gain and hair loss. Doctors dismissed my complaints about weight gain and said I "needed to eat less and exercise more". I ended up putting on 20 kilograms before diagnosis (Hashimoto's). I also lost a lot of hair; I have lots of it, so I never risked bald spots on my head or anything, but there were strands of hair everywhere: on the pillow every morning, on the kitchen floor, in the shower, on my clothes...it was only after diagnosis that I realised I had been more tired than usual, but it all happened gradually, meaning I got used to having less energy and adapting to a slower pace...but the weight gain bothered me most of all, especially since I knew that I was not eating more than before. There was no objective reason for me to put on that much weight, no matter what the doctors said...
I had a TSH of 50 !! was acutely paranoid, very cold with puffy eyes. Treated with an anti psychotic and thyroxine , for 3 weeks, got well , came out of hospital then stopped the nasty antipsychotic and was very well after that until I had a reading of 18.3 in 2002 and became paranoid again, V well since.
Was feeling very tired and needed to sleep every afternoon, and even then still felt tired. Had (and still do have) very brittle nails, loss of hair on legs (although fortunately not head), constipation, plagued by negative thoughts (all of which I put down to the stress of losing 2 beloved kitties within 6 months of each other). I think it was my palpitating heart that was the final straw, I thought something really isn't right here, and I sent off for some private tests for my thyroid, primarily because my mother had Graves. There are just SO many symptoms that are easy to either dismiss as 'stress' or put down to other complaints, it can be difficult to piece them together into underactive thyroid.
I didn`t have any obvious symptoms, apart from weight gain, but I put it down to my age. The diagnosis of underactive thyroid was unexpected.
Hi Chealsea, I've become convinced that your body will immediately send you signals and you should pay attention. My very, very first sign was when I came down the stairs first thing in the morning my ankles would hurt and I wondered why they so sore. But later in the day they were fine. Weakness in my legs came later and the weight gain. I think air hunger was also a sign. Smooth muscle is affected by low thyroid so I think a hoarse, croaky voice is part of that or maybe it's a swollen gland. A high sedimentation rate made doctors think it was arthritis. Unfortunately the thyroid was not their first thought but this was many years ago.
For hypothyroidism my symptoms were: I gained weight, dizziness...had brain fog or my concentration was bad.. eg., I'd start telling a story and I'd forget what I was taking about, was tired, constipation. 100mcg of Eltroxin Co of Levothyroxine ... In about a week I felt better ... Hope this helps.
