Just letting off steam really.......

Just back from the Endo who has said that due to 1, my age and 2. the impact of it on my heart I should come off T3 ; this is as T3 also masks the true result of TSH. "Stay on it if you must, but I don't think you should and don't condone it, the previous Endo who put yoou on it is a very brave man". Then...'give it 6-8 weeks off it, see how you feel and then go back on it if need be, but I strongly recommend that due to your age you come off it.' Fed up...really, really fed up.

Covering their back, protecting their job. Health of the patient doesn't come into it. DIY.

He obviously doesn't know much about T3 to say that you need 6-8wks off of it to 'see how you feel'!

How do you feel on it?

(((liz))) there's no reason to feel fed up.

DIY. Feck em ! Take a holiday to Greece or buy some T3 on t'internet. Do not let this buffoon rob you of your bloody great health. Tell him what you're doing and why you're doing it. God knows how long it will take you to get back to equilibrium if you stop for 6-8 weeks. He knows jack. He can't stop you and one or more of the wise ones will be along in a mo to let you know that this heart business is unfounded hogwash, based on people who were bed bound and really crusty.

The truth is your endo is likely on a bonus if he can get lots of his patients off T3, because it costs the nhs too much money. The fact that it's €1.16 a box of 30 25mcgs in Greece, over the counter, should have endos lobbying NICE (huh) as to why our T3 is the most expensive in the known universe and I don't doubt, beyond.

Ask your endo what he would do if his partner was feeling bloody great on T3 and we're at the real truth of the matter. Little sh*t.

Best to you. Take control.

Keep an eye on yr pulse rate/temp (1st thing in morning temp) make sure theyve not increased, chk yr t3 not over range and if yr gp really wants to, get yr heart chkd out. It seems wrong to come off t3 thats making you feel better unless you hve actual reason to.

Yes, I agree. Say that if he thinks your heart is a problem you insist on seeing a cardiologist! I believe cardiologists use T3 themselves, so will be a lot more knowledgeable. Altho I don't think you'll get the referral, as it's all hot air.

I had a scan done 2 or 3 years ago...the previous Endo suggested I should. All clear 100% fine.......

Agree with mrsm49 and would like to add that you keep an eye on your blood pressure (BP). I was given the same story, I take NDT (has T3 in it). Generally if your BP is under control your heart is probably not suffering or over reacting to the added T3.

At my last appointment 16 months ago, the endo asked if I would come off T3. He couldn't use age as a reason but did say there could be long term effects on my heart and bones. I explained how I'll I'd been on T4 and the choice was no quality of life now, struggling to get out of bed and being unable to work, or face the possibility - not certainty - of problems in the future. I could be run over by a bus next week!

Do what you think is right for you.

She clearly wasn't really that interested in how much better it had made me feel...that's what has disappointed me so much.

I'd ask to see the studies that back up what the endo is saying, as it sounds like rubbish given the Rotterdam study and general physiology - how can taking T3 "block the true result of TSH"? and what does that even mean?

liz1952 profile image
liz1952 in reply toAngel_of_the_North

I think she was meaning that T3 wasn't as important a benefit as T4...therefore I should stop taking T3 for T4 to make me better.....clearly didn't listen to what I had said about my health prior to taking T3....that's what has distressed me as much as anything, not just the coming off T3, but the disregard for me...she should have known better than that.

How do you FEEL? Thats more important than numbers. Don't come off T3 if you feel OK.

If it was me, I would continue with what makes me feel better, if necessary source my own meds and pay for my own blood tests (and dump the endo if not free of charge).

Rapunzel profile image
Rapunzel in reply toAngel_of_the_North

She's not free of charge tho, is she, Angel ? We can all too easily fall into the trap of believing our nhs is 'free' because it's free at the point of delivery. It bliddy well isn't free.

If you go to work, buy petrol, cigarettes, booze, chocolate biscuits, houses, inherit money, sell a possession at a profit...I could go on; you freaking pay for the nhs. And we thyroidies are paying royally for a 'service' that just isn't working.

Instead we have a bunch of @rses in charge of this ship of fools who instead of regulating the price of T3 and giving a license to NDT, allow some sweaty swivel eyed reptiles to make a fortune off our poor backs, break the nhs coffer and then sell their obscenely profitable enterprise on to some corporate behemoth.

Not that I'm bitter 👿

Well, you've already paid whether you use her or not - perhaps I should say "free of extra charge". It's not like you get a refund when you go private.
