Does anyone else ever experience the underneath of their tongue to ever get sore with enlarged papillae? And could you tell me if you ever figured out why you do? I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis.

One possibility could be low B12! Have you ever had your b12 tested. If so do you know what your results were with reference ranges. Maybe re post on the pernicious anaemia society on health unlocked

Thank you! I still have yet to get tested to see if my vitamin b-12 is low. To me it seems it is.

Scalloped tongue can be quite common with hypothyroidism and other maladies. It usually means your nutrient base is inadequate (which is a common issue with those of us who have hypothyroidism, due to malabsorption as hypo causes stomach acid to lessen).

Therefore, there's no doubt that the suggestion by Pixielula of you having possibly low B-12 or low ferritin could be right on target.

Correcting nutrient issues by restoring absorption (via stomach acid) can be easily done by taking HCL with Pepsin or Betaine. In conjunction with that, compensate thyroid hormone (which also is adversely affected by malabsorption) by adding sublingual T3 (which is T4 but already converted).

"Hypothyroidism and the Tongue

Dr. McKay often observes enlarged tongues with scalloped edges (due to pressing against the teeth) in people with years of low thyroid function. When there is a decrease in the thyroid function, the glands may enlarge, shrink or change shape and therefore they cause the scalloped tongue.

If you are not able to absorb micronutrients from your food and supplements then your thyroid will have a tough time doing its job. Not only is the thyroid directly connected to our digestive system, but a scalloped tongue is often the “canary in the coalmine” signalling that some aspect of your health is amiss.

Hypothyroidism produces so many disturbances within the body that it generally would also surface in the form of TMJ, which also produces a scalloped tongue. As with the scalloped tongue, a sore tip of the tongue is not a separate disorder but a symptom of a condition or a result of an action that hurt it."

This actually makes a lot of sense. I'll make sure to get my vitamin b-12 tested as soon as I can. Considering this had been going on for almost half a year now. Thank you for your response!
