Hi this may seem like a silly question but if the normal range for TSH is between 0.3 and 5 where is it often stated on the forum that if your hypothyroid you should aim for your TSH to be around 1 ?

The range is very, very wrong. And that is why so many people are still suffering.

You are hypo as soon as your TSH is consistantly over 3, and in some countries you would be treated when it reaches three. But, in the UK, the guidelines are different, so some reason.

It a highly disputed subject, but once on thyroid hormone replacement, the majority of people need their TSH to be one or under to feel well.

If you feel well with a TSH that is higher, then that is fine. We're all different and have to do what's best for us as individuals. :)

You're welcome. :)

Normal ranges are made up from blood results of people believed not to have a particular disease - then a bit of leeway is added to each end of the range. If you look at a graph of blood results of healthy people you'll see a big spike around 1. Hardly anyone is at the top end of the range, showing that they probably included people who were hypo when they invented the ranges. Statistically, if you have a TSH result over about 2.5, you are unlikely to be healthy - basic maths/stats.

Thankyou that 's a great explanation and really makes me understand things more. 😊

As I have said before, I want a TSH reading that reflects that of people who are in the peak of health. Why don't the medical fraternity perform the thyroid blood test on participants within sporting events such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games? They each undergo blood tests anyway, so just take an extra sample from each one!

To simply use a batch of those who could very well each be undiagnosed Hypothyroid, seems utterly stupid, almost to the point of being criminal.
