Received blood test results from my doctor today which showed I have an under active thyroid. I have my first prescription for Eutirox and will start tomorrow. Tests also showed that I am borderline diabetic and high cholesterol. I only went because I started to have unbearable hot flushes and night sweats! I am a bit shell shocked!!
This is new to me!: Received blood test results... - Thyroid UK
This is new to me!
I'm the same! Just went for a bog standard blood test and was told I'm borderline under active and given Levothyroxine. Did some research and now I'm terrified of ballooning, losing my hair etc. I felt totally fine! Hideous!
We all. need thyroid hormones to function so not treating will be far worse but yes I appreciate it's a shock and particularly on a forum you don't always read good things as many are in hear because they have problems. But there are even more that get on very well so no need to be with us.
The best way to put the fears to one side is to learn what it all means and how it works. If you look at the Thyroid UK site-they run this forum- there is loads of info that you will find to explain what is happening and excellent info on the correct way to take your medication and possible fit other medication around it to regain optimum health.
If you understand it better you can manage it better. So shout out if there is anything you don't understand and nothing is too trivial-remember we have all been there!
So glad you have found this forum and welcome!
I would not worry about high cholesterol, the thyroxine should reduce it and in any case it is not the horror that is made out. See " The great cholesterol con" by Dr .Kendrick
You do need to make dietary changes re the pre diabetic .I was not told how close I was to being diabetic and a year later was diabetic ..I reduced carbs cutting out all cakes and deserts ,kept fats . 3 months later my blood tests were as for 15 months before .Of course once diabetic the docs say you always are.
I have been on thyroxine for over 60 years for a underactive thyroid. Started taking it as a child, something I have to take for the rest of my life. The thyroid gland is one of the most important glands in your body. When you first found out it must have been a shock. But it can be controlled by medication. Silver fox has some good advice, you just have to read the information available to you. All the best for the future.
