Ndt and folate for pregnancy. Next steps post GP chat .

Hi all,

I had a chat with the GP today and explained the suppressed TSH ( on NDT) I wasn't challenged as expected and although I couldn't get a prescription I didn't get a hard time either. The doctor actually commented that I knew more than her.

Now my thyroid is stable I'm wanting to try and conceive ( I'm 44 so have a small window to do this)

I'm laying the foundations as I don't want any more miscarriages ( getting progesterone levels checked ) and just wondering about taking a pure folate. I've done a bit of research and I don't think there are any contraindications as long as I take the med and folate apart from one another.

I do take a few natural B supplements at the weekend - conscious that I don't want to take too much as I take a thyroid support supplement as well ( recommended by doc peatfield ) I know I could wait and ask him if I get pregnant but I'd also like to do as much as possible to help myself .

Any comments welcome .

TSH is irrelevent when taking ANY form of thyroxine.

Luckily during our conversation this GP did say she doesn't go by numbers but how you feel so that was refreshing as I'm aware of the irrelevance of TSH but thought I might have be challenged about my choices and the fact it's suppressed. I explained that only the ft3 and ft4 were useful .

Folic acid is recommended by NICE for women planning to conceive and for the first three months. But we know that folic acid isn't as good as folate, so I would continue with that now and for three months after you conceive should that happen. As you say, 2 hours away from your thyroid treatment. I take all my supps before bed as it is well away from any thyroid tablets.

That's useful. I 've found a good one with Cytoplan and think will revise all my supplements. ( and run by doc p)

The Vit A in the thyro complex concerns me a little .
