I am new here, need some help. Throat Problem.

Ok so for the past 2 half months I have had some pretty serious problems with my throat. Which started with problems eating and breathing due to swollen feeling in my throat, which became inflamed. This then slowly disappeared but then came my really painful throat, where I cannot talk for too long before it becomes so painful I have to stop talking. I have been drinking water and any fluids to keep my throat lubricated as much as possible. I am 25 and have never had a problem of this magnitude before, apart from tonsillitis since I was younger I would get that a lot. Only recently have I have problems with tonsil stones which seem to most doctors to be something they never heard of. I have no idea if this is due to tonsil stones, infection, or something else. Wish someone could give me an idea. Ive already done some checks on my health blood tests and such so ill answer once I get an answer to this regarding that.

Thanks anyway, new here so hope someone see's my post.

Hey I had symptoms like this too, got pretty bad just before I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. Since starting medication I'v not had it again.

Thank you for your reply. I have checked up on a few things already, but awaiting my appointment this month to see an ENT specialist. I hope, for all my waiting which has been nearly 3 months now, I get some help.

I feel it seems to be pointing towards as you say, thyroid, maybe something regarding acid reflux however I have been on medication for that to no avail. Tonsil stones still unsure if it is but right now im drinking teas and certain medication to hopefully dissolve them if they are further down then I can see.

Been using salt water, honey, citrus gargles of all kinds of concoctions. Nothing is helping.

I am hoping this can be resolved and if so I will make sure to update here to help others because it seems anything in the throat is literally unheard of online for anyone to get help. Everything is just general help, nothing solid. Thankfully you and others here are kind enough to reply to me regarding this.

How long did it take for your sumptoms to resolve?

Hello again, well basically at first my throat was inflamed. Could not eat or breath correctly but soon after it goes, I get a severe infection where I am coughing up mucus all day everyday for about 1 week or a little longer. While this is occurring I notice that I have tonsil stones. Removing those for a few days as I had maybe 3 to 4 come into view. After this however did not see anymore but then having to cough so hard with the infection, my throat started to hurt, well really painful to talk. Still with feeling of lump in my throat and needing to clear my throat. It came right after the swelling hit me and it was really random, out of the blue. One day fine, next day inflamed.

Had to google tonsil stones, surprised GP's haven't heard of them though. Salt water gargles are recommended.

Again, thank you for your reply also. Yeah tonsil stones are like the myth of the GP's practice. Its odd, considering it effects thousands and thousands of people worldwide. More serious then some conditions. They are only soft but feel solid when in the mouth. Its horrible to remove them and sometimes go unnoticed. The doctors really need to start understanding this problem more.

Thanks again.

It may be hypothyroidism, but there are a few conditions which can cause this set of problems, including food allergy. My husband has been diagnosed with this, and it's been suggested that allergy may be one cause of my own swallowing and throat swelling problem. Try googling 'adult eosinophilic oesophagitis'.

It sounds as though further investigation is called for in your case. Have you had an endoscopy?

I will look this up and thank you for your time and kindness in replying. Like others here, I appreciate it. I think I need to get myself an allergy test as I have never had one. So first thing tomorrow ill try book myself in.

I am waiting on ENT doctor inspection this month, so hoping something comes from that. Camera down the throat to check.

Thanks again.

Look up symptoms of LPR. I am having similar problems and have appt with ENT in 2 weeks. My asthma doc thinks I may have LPR which is often triggered by a respiratory virus.

It is interesting that you point out LPR as I have not heard of this yet. I have taken tablets for acid reflux but there are so many variations of what it can cause and there names it is hard to determine which one I would have, If I had it. As I have no signs of reflux, however I am aware that people can get silent reflux.

What was even more interesting however is that the symptoms match what I am dealing with and also, I did have an infection of my throat and chest for a around two weeks, where I was coughing up all kinds of goo. (sorry to say). It came deep too from my chest. So maybe this has trigger that off.

I was taking omeprazole, need to go back to doctor to get some more however. It did not really change the problems I was having, so not sure it was helping or not. I took it for 3 weeks roughly.

Funny enough I am also seeing my ENT in 2 weeks. 14th of September. Also going to see dentist too in about 1 week, to see if they know anything too.

Apparently LPR can take 6+ weeks to respond to omeprazole.
