Anxiety, Hot Flashes, Palpitations. Advice needed

Ok, it's now been 29 days since my thyroid lobectomy and I am experiencing some horrible symptoms now.

Anxiety/shaky throughout the day/night, getting very little sleep. I am starting to sweat and get hot flashes as well. Heart palpitations occur some during the day, but a lot while I sleep.

What's going on????? What can I do????

I have some anti-anxiety meds, but don't want to take them unless I absolutely have to, which I feel is getting close.

Advice please.

DanteNXS,

I think you need to contact your doctor now rather than wait out the six weeks and have TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested to see whether you are hypothyroid.

I did a private test yesterday, since my go only wants to do tsh and t4. The results should be back by Friday. Is there any chance that the remaining thyroid can still overcome this and return to normal?

I am having ft3, ft4, t4, tsh, and rt3 done.

He said there was no need to run them all, it would only confuse things. Can you believe that?

DanteNXS,

What is there for your remaining thyroid to overcome? If it is not producing sufficient hormone you will require replacement hormone.

How sad that your doctor is so easily confused. Most people find a full thyroid panel helpful.

I guess my question is, since I am still in recovery mode, is this a normal process. Going hypo/hyper, while the thyroid is going through it's recovery. My doctor said that this could happen, but it's a normal path that the thyroid takes after surgery.

DanteNXS,

Unless they missed the nodule and took the wrong lobe out I don't see how you can be hyper. If the remaining lobe is under producing hormone I don't think it will improve without replacement. If you have positive Hashimoto's antibodies it is possible to feel hyper and hypo at the same time with euthyroid levels.

Do I need to retake the antibodies labs, even though they were all negative prior to surgery?

Just to clarify, I was referring to the hyper/hypo symptoms that I am going through, unless you're saying that they are all hypo. My apologies.

Is 4 weeks long enough time to give the remaining thyroid lobe to see if it will adjust? I just don't want to do anything rash, if you know what I mean?

Your advice is always treasured my friend, I am just a bit nervous, and possibly scared. Forgive me :-(

DanteNXS,

If antibodies were negative prior to surgery you can probably rule out Hashimoto's. The symptoms you have described could certainly be all hypo.

If you are hypo I honestly don't see how that will improve without replacement.

You're not doing anything rash in having blood tests. If your results show you are hypo there's no point in delaying taking replacement.

Ok, I will await the results and post them as soon as possible.

I greatly appreciate your feedback my friend and I apologize for my ineptness.

I hope you have a great day! :-)

DanteNXS,

You're not inept. It's hideously disappointing and demoralising not to feel better after surgery.

Hi, I agree with clutter you might be going hypothyroid. I went like this after my partial thyroidectomy and didn't know is was a sign of hypothyroidism until my follow up some time later. I assumed it was the menopause because of my age.

Good luck.

I was truly hoping to avoid going hypo.

How are you handling it?

It is now three and a half years since my surgery and I only started feeling better once I was put on Armour about 18 months ago. Unfortunately, I've been taken off it for various reasons and put back on the synthetic thyroid hormones that are making me ill again. So, I've started on a private prescription and have noticed a difference immediately. I am still hypo because the synthetic t3 mucked up my tsh and free t4 and the natural stuff has a lower t3 so I need to build up my stores of free t4 before I will start to feel more normal. Given time I should feel better soon.

I hope you don't have to wait for treatment as Gps aren't very good with thyroid health. My gp told me they don't get any training and so don't know how to interpret blood results properly.

If you need any help PM me.

TT xx.

I will post my results (as usual) once they come in.
