Is depression a symptom of hyperthyroidism? I have been over-medicated with thyroxine and have anxiety, tremors, hot flushes, irritability and now low mood too!

beany6 Depression is a sign of hypothyroidism. Mood swings, irritability and anxiety can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. From your previous posts it seems you were diagnosed with hypothyroidism many years ago.

However, if you have been overmedicated with thyroxine, then that doesn't mean you have hyperthyroidism, it means you've taken too much thyroxine and should reduce it to the dose that's right for your hypothyroidism.

Did you stay on the lower dose of 100mcg thyroxine? Altering the dose can take a few weeks for the full effect to be felt.

Do you have a full set of thyroid results, ie TSH, FT4 and FT3, done recently? If so can you post them, with reference ranges. Have you ever had antibodies tested?

Irritability, mood swings, fatigue and anxiety are all hyper symptoms and aren't a million miles from depression, esp if you're also having trouble sleeping. There is a lot of crossover between being under- and over-active.

Being over medicated is really horrible and results in all sorts of symptoms. It's taken me three months to get 'almost well' from being over medicated for about a year but I think what has helped most is the advice from this forum. I really wish I'd found it sooner, and therefore started supplementing with the right vitamins and minerals sooner, as I think that has made a huge difference. Although I've had side effects from Vitamin b12, it has certainly given me more energy and magnesium has proven positive effects on the hideous anxiety that over medication can cause. I have also rectified a deficiency in D3 which can also cause low mood. Have a look at the advice that was given to me (and lots of others!) and get yourself tested. It will take time but you will get better. 😊

What testing have you had done? How do you know you are over medicated? What if you don't convert t4 in your levo to the active t3? You can be overmedicated on levo and hypo due to poor conversion..meaning you are both, hypo and hyper..it happened to me many times.
