Is it a simple matter of over eating surely if you don't take in the calories you can't gain weight.

If that was the case a calorie controlled diet would prevent weight gain and would result in weight loss wouldn't it?

Hypo and hyper patients gain weight because thyroid dysfunction messes with their metabolism, and in some cases the medication taken for hypo and hyper can cause weight gain.
