Can I ask those with Hashi's who have reacted badly to Iodine, what meds work best for you? Synthetic? Or NDT? I know it's an individual thing but I'm just curious to know what other people's experiences are with either of these.

The general advice is not to take iodine if you have Hashimotos and are taking levo.

Those who do take iodine should take selenium .Not sure but think 200mcg a day .Please check.

Well, that sounds like me! I'm best on T3 only. NDT made me very ill, and put on an awful lot of weight. I've lost it on T3 only.

I started supplementing with iodine when I was on Levo only as I was still very symptomatic and I'd read it could help! I have hashimoto's. At first it was great. Brain fog/aches and pains/blurred vision etc etc disappeared. Hearing got more acute. Everything improved. It was like a light switch had been switched on. I felt I was being awoken from sleep. Every single cell was springing to life. I was alive.

However this didn't last long. After a couple of weeks. I started to feel wired. Everything was acute. Everything single cell started to jangle. I was starting to feel pain if I touched anything/walked (just putting one foot in front of the other or touching anything caused pain). My skin hurt. If I brushed my hair it was agony. My eardrums hurt. Everything was so noisy. My eyesight was affected. Normal light felt like very very bright lights. My eyes hurt if I blinked/looked up/down to the side etc.

I've since learnt iodine and hashis don't mix. I would be very careful if you have hashimoto's and are thinking of supplementing with iodine. Your choice of course but I would advise against taking it.

Hope this helps? X

Thanks for the replies everyone. The reason I ask is because I beleive I have an underlying thyroid problem for the last 13 years. Along the way I developed extreme PMS/PMDD and had to have a hysterectomy because it was so severe. It was identified it was the hormone Progesterone that made me so unwell pre menstrually. More recently I took a multivitamin and then weirdly I had the same reaction from taking it. I ended up in A & E but nobody could confirm what it was, I felt like it almost killed me. I haven't recovered from it and I have an enlarged scalloped tongue and slightly swollen neck because of it. I am currently bedridden and can barely function. I noticed the vitamins contained Iodine. i researched the Iodine and Progesterone connection and it appears that both stimulate the thyroid gland with Hashimoto's (that's whats led me to beleive I may have this) except I have never been treated for my throid, and the symptoms I displayed pre menstrually and more recently from Iodine are Mxyodema. Either that or I may have a pituitary problem. I'm off to see Doctor Peatfield tomorrow for a second opinion. My bloodwork appears normal. (I haven't had Hasimoto's antibodies tested for).

I've very recently done (even more) online research. It's recommended to take 200 mcg selenium daily plus 25mg Zinc daily to assist thyroid. Along with D3, B12

Yes I will be supplementing with selenium (that's something I've never done before and also zinc too). I supplement with D3 and B12 already aswell as a B complex. Thank you for the info
