Yes i have the same issue my cholesterol has always been raised, ever since i became Hypo many years ago.

At one point it was 7 now its 6.9 i have lost quite a bit of weight so am having another test done at the end of this week.

Upping your protein should not raise your cholesterol.

If it's high linked to your thyroid hormones and how much refined carbs you eat.

What do you mean high? It may be fine, reducing cholesterol level is not always a good idea. 2 years ago I was told high cholesterol, told to reduce fat intake and put on statins. My cholesterol reduced a lot but I developed a lot of side effects of statins AND low cholesterol. It's in every cell of the body and we need it. 80 % is from your diet and 25% of that is in your brain. When you reduce it you compromise the health of your brain and other tissues. You can't even make enough vitamin D! It would be interesting to see your results, unless you have the genetic version you actually may be ok.

I can recommend reading 'the great cholesterol con' by Dr Malcolm Kendrick. It's illuminating! Carbs and sugar is the enemy not fat. I stopped my statins and eat a low carb high fat diet now. I have lost weight, my high blood sugar has stabilised, as has my high cortisol. I'm sure that along with my supplementing with b12 and vitamin D, my high fat diet has contributed to increased energy and decreased joint/muscle pain and brain fog. :-)

You are so right. There is no connection between high cholesterol and heart disease. The British Heart Foundation make millions on this myth, which doctors continue to pedal. In fact, high cholesterol, particularly for women, is good. Ditch the statins. They are poison.

Money speaks louder than facts I think!

Yes, definitely. I am a vegetarian with high cholesterol. Hoping levo will lower it eventually! Try low fat sources of protein, like Quorn. Also there are bars, like Trek bars (you can get them from health food shops) that are high in protein but also (relatively) healthy. If you are really worried, then avoid eggs and replace them with vegan foods (again, try health food shops for tofu- which is very good for protein). Hope this helps! I am naughty and eat cakes and eggs. I tried to lower my cholsterol by cutting out all dairy and eggs, but it was just too depressing....

If you're hypo, you shouldn't be eating tofu, or any other form of unfermented soy. It will make you more hypo. Besides, humans cannot absorb the protein from soy.

oh dear... best ignore what I said then! Guess there will be no more tofu stirfrys for me then :(

Hi,

All of my friend's family have high cholesterol. She's vegan, & eats a predominantly raw food diet, with only healthy fats.

I don't think that protein intake has any bearing on cholesterol. Sugar, yes; protein, no. If you think the advice is sensible, and your kidneys are OK, why not try a small increase and see what happens? Drop some carbs and replace with protein.

Hi there

When first diagnosed my cholesterol was 'bad' (over top end of range, good low and bad high). As my liver was also bad I supplemented with various things and then after some reading decided (amongst other things) to introduce the joy of oats into my life. Now, I hate porridge, have never had any truck with muesli and thought oatcakes were an excuse for eating cardboard so this was not an easy decision.

I try to eat oats in the ratio of 2 parts oat to 1 part oat bran as it's the latter that does most of the good.

Six months after trying this out ( I spent a while trying other stuff) my cholesterol is now 'great' according to my doctor. I'm finding muesli the most palatable but have ventured into the porridge realm although I have to say still not keen. I have a large bowl per day and if I'm travelling for work keep oat cakes (cheese ones) as emergency oats.

They are also great to sort out any remaining issues with sluggish digestion

i have had a bad reaction to changing to a protien diet because of my weight issues.

i had been practically vegetarian and lost no weight but lots of valuable nutrients..

i have acid reflux and the meat i ate just kept coming back up. i am living on eggs, prawns, salmon, lettuce cucumber..so hearing not to many eggs because of my high cholesterol is alarming.. i couldnt eat oats without sugar and my diet is bad enough without eating stuff i dont like.i never eat anything with sugar in it...cut bread out when on protein food but might have to start eating it again. milk i can tolerate so was thinking about rice pudding but then carbs are bed for adrenal issues..

Eggs are fine, the eggs and cholesterol fear has since been debunked. Dr Michael Mosley has eggs for breakfast virtually every day, as do I. If you are my age you'll remember an advert for eggs with the catchphrase, written by the late Carla Lane, which was 'go to work on an egg.' It's still true today. :-)
