Yes. How much are you taking? If they started you on too low a dose, you could even feel worse. But in any case, it takes at least six weeks for the dose you're on to take full effect. And then you will more than likely need an increase.

So, after six weeks, go back for a blood test. Go early in the moring - at least before 9 am - fast, you can just drink water; and leave at least 24 hours between your last dose of Levo and the blood test. :)

Hiya I'm on 50 at the moment they left 3 months before the next blood test, allso these pills make me itch all over not all the time tho

Three months is much too long. Go back after six weeks and tell them you still feel bad and want a test - 50 mcg is just a starter dose.

It will be the fillers making you itch, not the T4. Ask your pharmacist if you can try another brand next time.

No, sorry, I Don't take. You could try posting another question and asking if you Don't get any helpful hints on this thread.

Hi, I too have been on Levothyroxine 50 mgs for over 4 weeks now and still feel no better. I apparently have to wait 12 weeks before my blood is tested.

Initially the small dose is detected and the thyroid produces less so you will feel worse until a larger amount is prescribed.

Once I'm on the right dose should it stabilise or will I keep needing more?

Treepie profile image
Treepie in reply tovivienneferreira

It should stabilise,i went from 75 to 100 then 125. But so e folk find years later a change is needed. The real problem is that the doc decides based on blood tests ,rather than how you feel.

Do you know if red burning eyes are due to it being low?

Treepie profile image

There seems to be a link as i recall posts on the subject.I suggest that you put " red eyes" in the search box and see what turns up .If using ipad you need to tap the return button to search.

My sons just been started on a trial of thyroxine 50mcg for 2 weeks then 100mcg until next app in two months ... When I started taking thyroxine 2 years ago I was started on 25mcg and kept on that till I upped in December myself to 50mcg and then again in February to 100mcg and it's only now I'm really seeing the benefits

I think they leave it to long before rechecked the blood realy mines 3 months

Itching is also a hypo symptom. I was always very itchy when I was under active. The low dose could be the reason for this and the itching could well calm down as you increase

Doc told us today that it would take a few weeks before my son felt any benefits and to just stick with it .. I was a little surprised at the dosage levels but realise now that I was started too low and left too long on that dosage which I might add I'd still be on and suffering if I hadn't upped myself

vivienneferreira profile image
vivienneferreira in reply toLanvere

It's frustrating isnt it as it restricts your whole life I'm worried if I up it myself I'd run low on pills

I got a telephone consult with my GP and basically told her I was upping it to see if it made a difference which she agreed the second time to 100 I just did it then told her my recent blood tests show that the higher dose it correct

Thinking about it I think a lot of us put up and shut up and just battle on I'm trying to be more assertive and stand my ground
