Unexplained weight gain is a clinical symptom of hypothyroidism (GPs appear not to know this phenomenon.

Weight is gained gradually because your thyroid gland is failing and our normal metabolism is lowered to such an extent that weight gradually increases.

Some people lose weight when on an optimum of thyroid hormones and others have to do diet as well. It's no use dieting until you are on the optimum which varies between people.

Hi

My weight shot up by 2 stone, never been more than 8st 4lbs in my life, but took GPs four years to discover why!

Levo did not reduce my weight at all and after two years I eventually started 5:2 diet and steadily lost 1lb per week. Then I asked for, and was trialled on T3 as my Free T3 was always low and I lost weight much more quickly, in fact I started to worry when I got down to 7st 10lbs. GP has continued to prescribe T3 but not sure what is happening now as weight has started increasing for no reason and in just a couple of months I am up to 8st 5 lbs and still on 5:2!

Blood tests next week so hope that might show why. I wonder if it is possible that I now need more T4 as this level has been decreasing since taking T3 and was at 12 last time.

I thought when on the 5:2 when you got to a target weight you then switched to a maintenance of 5:1.

I take T3 only. T4's job is to convert to T3 so in itself isn't so important. What is required is an optimum of whatever thyroid hormones we take. If your TSH has begun to rise you wouldn't be on an optimum and that's maybe why your weight has increased.

If taking T3 it reduces the T4 below the ref range.

Are you having the earliest appointment and fast before blood test (you can drink water) and also leave about 24 hours since your last dose of hormones and the test :)

Bianca before your blood test and a couple of days before drink plenty of water (don't take too much of course). Also someone put a tip on the forum a few days ago and said that if they withdraw blood from your earlobe it runs more freely. If you want to try that :)

Yes I intended to do 5 :1 then resalized had put some back on. Yes first appt and will fast and not take meds. Have to say, the 5:2 was the only thing that worked for me
