Over active thyroid

I was diagnosed with an over active thyroid and I've been on carbimazole for a week and I'm feeling worse with sicknesses, tiredness and vertigo but I'm not sure if it is side effects or the medication just making me feel worse.

What dose are you on, Joss? It may simply be a bit of a shock to your system and will soon pass, but it would be worthwhile phoning your doctor or specialist to let them know, they might want to reduce your Carb a bit to ease you into it.

Your blood pressure will have dropped, your pulse rate will have dropped, both of which is directly attributable to the effects of the medication, and could explain the tiredness and vertigo. The sickness, however, could be because the medication does not suit you. When I was on Carbimazole I was extremely sick and they changed it to Propyl Thiouracil (sometimes called just PTU) which was gentler on my stomach, so it really is worth letting someone know.

I am on 15mg per day. I spoke to the doctor the other day and was told it was side effects I really don't know.

Thank you

The fact is that Carbimazole does not suit everybody, and to dismiss sickness as a side effect is not good. If you wish to see if it clears up, fine, but I would suggest that you wait no longer than 2 weeks, and if it persists, and you are unable to tolerate it, then insist that he does something. There IS an alternative which is kinder to the stomach, because they gave it to me.

I remember when I started on carb - 20mcg a day - I didn't feel great. I was incredibly tired, really grouchy too. After a month my dose was doubled and I began to feel better.

I remember I felt absolutely awful back then but I don't remember feeling sick or having vertigo either and I don't think my tiredness was a side effect of the carb - to me it was more a symptom of my Graves.

Have you read the patient information leaflet and are your symptoms listed as side effects? If you didn't get a leaflet from the pharmacist with the carb you need to Google for one, it's important that you read it.

Like Marram says, see how it goes but I don't think I would want to suffer for too long
