Interesting study. Like most elderly people, my parents were put on statins and both have deteriorating health, but keep taking them because the GP tells them they are necessary and harmless.

Thanks. Yes, I hope I can convince them to stop taking them, but I'm up against their (much better qualified!) GP. They used to be really healthy :-(

It's very difficult. Within a week of me starting a few years ago I was given statins after a week I was really suffering - leg muscles were so bad I could barely walk and I felt SO depressed and grumpy.

My husband said to stop taking them yet I kept saying I've got to take them, we were on holiday, husband then said to cut back and take them on alternate days, I still wasn't keen to do that but eventually he persuaded me to cut back then stop taking them altogether thank goodness but I found it very hard to stop when I had had them prescribed for me. Probably something to do with my rapid decline.

When we got home three weeks later I went to confess because I didn't want to keep getting prescriptions for them. I saw a locum doctor who offered me a different brand ( I was taking simvastatin) I declined and she said to try the Flora Pro Active stuff as there had been good results from people use them, I used them for quite a while then gave up.

I no longer do anything - however I discovered when my Graves was at its worst (hyper) my cholesterol was at its best. Now I'm in remission and my TSH is higher than when I was discharged and my cholesterol is increasing. When statins were last mentioned ( pretty half heartedly I have to say) I pointed out that if my TSH was lower my cholesterol would be too. The doctor just smiled and said she knew that.

Hope you can persuade them to stop their statins. I know the Flora stuff has been heavily 'manufactured' but if you could get them onto that it is probably better or them than statins.

Has it not occurred to you that plant sterols is the thing that helps - not margarine. They charge a fortune for this margarine, which is unhealthy and you would have to eat loads of it to get any effect. Why not just spend less and hve just the plant sterols without the unhealthy margarine that goes with it?

Hi Josiesmum - when I attended the last Thyroid UK conference Dr Kendrick was a speaker. Someone from the audience asked about their Dad who was not well on Statins at 86. Kendrick replied - Ask the GP if he has any research to state that statins can benefit someone of that age - or any age come to that. ( I added the last few words ! )

Yes Docs may be well educated - but they are also well paid for prescribing statins. Our brains are made up of over 25% cholesterol - so with 12 million people in the UK on statins - it is any wonder alzheimers and other brain conditions are on the up.

There is a natural statin made from red rice - which is how I believe it was discovered in the first place..... The positive effect of a statin is similar to the effects of taking VitD - anti-inflammatory. They have even added VitD to a new series of statins - obviously to enhance its effect so they can say it is the statin and not the VitD. It was discussed here some time ago ....

Maybe red rice yeast is not such a good idea. The rest of the article is a good read though - with lots of information in one place !

Do they really get paid to prescribe statins?

Marz profile image
Marz in reply toJosiesmum

Yes there is a list that I was sent as to the rewards to either the clinic or the GP's - AD's are well rewarded too. Thyroid medication ? - at the bottom of the list :-) Medicine is BIG business.

There was recently an outcry when they were talking about rewarded Docs 50 GBP's for diagnosing Alzheimers.

Doctors are well educated. But not in how to interpret statistics. And not in the thyroid.

I TOTALLY agree about alzeimers is on the increase which could be caused by statins.

It could also be caused by junk food, by too much sugar, by too much bad water - I drink distilled - by not enough fruit and veg andmuch more.A lot of people who have dementia dont take statins. I wouldnt take them if you offered to pay me to. When people get diabetes 2 it is due to their diet and they can reverse it but does the doctor tell them that, no he just gets to to take drugs.

An elderly neighbor told me he was pleased to be on the statins especially since his heart attack :O ???

Unfortunately he put his Doctor on a pedal stool as do many elderly.

We took both my Mum and Mum in Law off off statins and both felt much better straight away.

Unfortunately too late to prevent kidney failue and cataracts (known statin side effects,) in my Mum who is now sadly on dialysis 3 times a week.

Doctor wrote a prescription for statins for my Husband's high cholesterol, he already had weakened muscles, (another known side effect,) I made sure I educated him and in a letter back to his Doctor I wrote that he was NOT going to take these dangerous statins.

Now thankfully the Truth has come out in the daily newspapers so more people are aware of these dangerous drugs.

Hi Coastwalker - did he have the heart attack before taking statins or whilst he was taking them ? Apparently Kendrick does say there is a miniscule amount of benefit for males who have suffered an attack. Probably the anti-inflammatory bit again.

Do you follow Kendricks blogs ? They are an excellent read.

Sorry to read about your Mum - so sad.....

I believe our neighbor was on the statins beforehand, because I was left with my mouth wide open in shock and nothing coming out. (thinking at the same time the statins had probably caused his heart attack.)

:) Yes Marz I do read Kendrick's postings, does he do regular daily/weekly blogs ? I wouldn't mind signing up to one if there is ?

Mum is amazing now considering she nearly died, she has a new lease of life :)

That is such a disgrace - it ought to be made widely public!!

Well they are not harmless and the people who just hang on every word the doctor says are naive and too lazy to do their own research. Plant sterols are far better, natural, no side effects if not taken in too high a dose, and quite cheap. Dont go for the margarines and drinks that include them as it works out as a very very expensive way of getting them and you are eating unhealthy foods with them.

low q10 very common with statins and if someone must take them, they need to take q10.....turmeric c3 and fish oil and msm works wonders.
