Can I take my levothyroxine with Decaf tea in the morning?

HI

After 4 months of not taking my newly prescribed levo, I have decided I just cannot live like this anymore, so took my first tablet this morning.

On my box of tablets it says take a tablet in the morning with a drink and have no caffeinated drinks or food for half an hour. Do you think I could take my tablet with my de-caf tea in the morning?

Also, could I just clarify with someone please when I should take my blood pressure and other meds please ? I take Adalt slow release for blood pressure and a vit c and zinc supplement each morning.

Many thanks

The best advice is to have with half a glass of water about an hour before any other drink or food. I often take it at 5/6 am when I wake and then go back to sleep. Why get Levo and not take it?

Some think Vit C can be taken at the same time as it is thought it helps absorption . I take it this way . But other vits and meds need to be taken some3/4 hours away. It is important not to affect the absorption of the hormone with other meds.

The general rule is that levo should be taken with water an hour before any food only though I can't see how it would hurt to take it with decaf tea if it contains nothing else (no milk or sugar) and if you take it the same way (with tea) every day, as your absorption will be the same every day. What should be avoided is taking it a different way every day so the amount that gets into your system changes daily.

I'm not sure what the advice is re other meds though I take mine at least four hours away from other meds and supplements.

(Oops, for some reason I didn't see Treepie's reply - ?)

I find taking my Levothyroxine last thing at night, when I haven't eaten for some hours, works best for me. I am less likely to forget then, not being a morning person!

I have not taken levo for a long time(now on NDT) but I would say that taking it on an emty stomach is best. Did you know that because of the stomach proccesses it makes at least 40% of the levo inoperative?

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

I do have a little semi skimmed milk in the decaf tea as well. I just really need my tea on waking!

I take Adult 20 slow release for my high BP and a vitamin d with zinc supplement. When should I take these after taking levo? I go out to work at 8.30 am and really like to take my Meds before I leave as have a busy job and would probably end up not remembering to take them otherwise.

Thank you

Celiab, thyroid meds bind with the proteins in food and drink. For maximum aborption Levothyroxine should be taken with water on an empty stomach, 1 hour before food and drink, or two hours after, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium supplements, iron, vitD and oestrogen. Vit D is best taken with the fattiest meal of the day as fat aids absorption.

I have taken my levo in the morning for 15 years sometimes with water, tea or lemon in water. No difference really.
