Has anyone experience of malabsorption ,how it's treated ect? Xx
Malabsorption : Has anyone experience of... - Thyroid UK
Malabsorption
Malabsorption can be caused by so many things - so a bit more information would be useful. Crohns - Colitis - Diverticulitis - Low Acid - Coeliac - Candida - Low thyroid - Low B12 and so on it goes.
Happy to help if appropriate....
Well how it's treated depends on what's causing the malabsorption. I went gluten free for 2 years, I finally plucked up courage to have the endoscopy in November and I don't have coeliac disease according to the biopsies. I felt so much better off the gluten, (and also lost a stone without trying or giving up crisps and chocolate) but looking back and knowing what I do now, I would suspect that the low/rock bottom vitamin levels and bowel "issues" pre going GF were down to low stomach acid leading to poor digestion/malabsorption. Also I now realise I am lactose intolerant which won't have helped. It all fits now, the menorraghia without any obvious cause, the bilateral mild carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, brain fog, exhaustion, depression and so on and so forth. Everything now GONE. Because I take NDT now and a shed load of vitamins and function normally again. I think I'm hypothyroid. The NHS say I'm not.
Hi, you can be Gluten Intolerant and not have Cealiac disease. I am so sensative to Gluten that even if i handle bread now i am sick. Stay off the Gluten if you felt so well as you are probably Gluten Intolerant like thousands of other people. Gluten has been proven to actually trigger thyroid problems in people that cannot tolerate Gluten and Lactose. Worth knowing these things as it took many years for me to discover why i was so sickly. xx
Sounds like what I was like. Had all the symptoms but had a within normal range thyroid blood test. I take all the vitamins to make my thyroid function better and had to take NDT as I was a cot case..literally. Three years of physchiatrists visits couldn't cure my "in my head" depression and debilitating anxiety. Close to going into a mental facility. But I knew it was my thyroid so I went to a Natripath who said yes (bad) then actually had to go overseas to the USA for treatment by thyroid specialist who actually believed me and sent me NDT. One hour after first tablet....bingo anxiety f gone!!!. Now all I have to do is make an appointment with physchiatrist who
gas lighted me when I said I had hypothyroidism which I had been telling the fuckers for 18 odd years, put on 40 kilos ect ect. I couldn't walk, kept falling over, minor and major motor skills affected, hair falling out, memory issues, headaches, cracked feet, dry skin, anxiety depression, social isolation, irritability , eyebrows gone on outer edge, constipation, aches and pains in joints. Now all symptoms just about gone. So angry.
I believe taking a small amount of cider viniger in water can help digestion.
I sought help from a private nutritionist as I was getting nowhere with my GP. My GP has prescribed B12 injections, vitamin D and iron, but there has been no interest in establishing why I am deficient in everything.
The nutritionist has been treating me for malabsorption and, under her guidance, I have been taking lots of Betaine with every meal. I have also changed my diet drastically and am taking other supplements to deal with candida, a gut infection and bacterial overgrowth, and also taking high level vitamins, protein etc. to help with the deficiencies that have shown up in tests.
Before seeing the nutritionist, I had been taking apple cider vinegar, but not sure that it was helping much as there was so many other health issues going on. I have been gluten-free for well over a year too.
I had enteropathy from long-term gluten intolerance. I went GF in 2003. Since then I've tried lots of different things to improve gut function ... probiotics, Betaine HCl, several different enzyme preparations. The only thing that has had a clearly positive effect on my gut, is "Complete Digestion" from Enzyme Science. However, even with that, I continue to have low Total Blood Protein (an issue that conventional doctors don't seem to notice even when they run tests ). I deal with the protein issue by taking a blend of 9 essential free amino acids. Of course, I take vitamin+mineral supps too.
Celiac disease here and Malabsorption for years before diagnosis. Simple blood test. Should have had it many years before. I am much better now. But I do not cheat and eat small amounts of wheat. I sure feel better.
