Mellee, you have my sympathy. I have hypo but did experience severe palpitations and was very unwell.

Others who have turned the corner with their hyperthyroidism will respond soon and may be able to give advice.

You are right - the medical profession seem to have 'lost their skills' and we, the patients, have to source another way to recover. Thankfully with this forum you can vent your frustration and also get the support of others who've been along the same road and hopefully feel much better in the very near future . :)

Oh dear Mellee, I remember feeling like that way back when I was first diagnosed, well perhaps not quite then, at the point where I was first diagnosed I felt like my body was going to blow up. pounding heart that sole me every night, sweats, that woke me f the pounding heart didn't, you don't even need to imagine it - you're living it.

Anyway, one night on our way to line dancing - believe it or not I was trying (unsuccessfully) to keep up with a much older pensioner - I didn't want t be seen t be as weak as I felt - and I nearly got us both killed crossing a busy dual carriageway. next morning I went to see a different doctor to the one who had told me a couple of months beforehand that 'I was needing my holiday'. I had blood tests the day after and by the next day I was taking carbimazole, had an appointment with an endo and another one to go back in five weeks for another blood test.

That was in November, I was taking 20mcg of carb a day. I can remember going into total meltdown and yelling and crying over because my husband left me on my own and 'had fun' at a pre Christmas party next door. Honestly - pathetic - I was 64! I should have known better! This was after I had already had a melt down because he thought I could host the gathering myself! He quickly realised that wasn't going to happen. So at Christmas even though I'd had a month in carb I was still pretty volatile.

After the four week blood test I got a letter from my endo telling me to increase the carb to 40mcg a day and that was probably the turning point. I can't remember ever feeling so bad again but at the time I felt dreadful, I slept most of the day and night, I had absolutely no energy, I couldn't even be bothered speaking to people or seeing friends.

By the time I actually saw the endo at the end of February I had been on such a large dose of carb without having had another blood test and by then I was quite hypo ( which was a different problem) so make sure you don't go too long without having your bloods checked.

My first post on this site was to ask 'Will I ever feel normal again?' And the answer was 'Yes' and yes I do. I was treated on block and replace - if you look at the ThyroidUK website you'll find lots of really interests information so have a look on there.

Just try and get plenty of rest, first time I've ever been glad to be old - the kids had left home and as it was on,y the two of us I just lay around doing feeling pathetic and nothing, my husband did all the shopping and cooking etc. I've been in remission now since 7/11/13 so I've got my fingers crossed.

What stage are you at in your treatment?

Have your vitamins D and B12, ferritn and folates checked out - your thyroid wants them all to be near the top of their ranges. I also took 1000mcg slow release vitamin C + zinc every day, I took vitamin D and B12 because both were low in ther ranges, I also took CoQ10 and a multivitamin plus five Brazil nuts every day and I started eating seeds and nuts. I tried to eat good wholesome food and cut out junk, I've also gone completely gluten free now.

Always ask fir a copy of your test results along wth their lab ranges and I kept a daily diary of how I was feeling thigh out my treatment and that proved to be really useful.

I hope you feel better soon, Graves is awful and I don't think people generally realise how ill you are and how ill you feel. I lost SO much weight that I looked really good so people just didn't appreciate how weak and ill I was feeling. Bye certain come t the right place for support - I don't know how I'd have managed without everyone on here. 😊

Mellee this was me a few weeks ago, I'd reached rock bottom, GP saying you are depressed etc. I was diagnosed on 3 October this year and commenced on 10mg Carbimazole. I was referred to local hospital but told waiting list of 20 weeks so I decided to go private. I saw Endo on 30 October who increased Carbimazole to 20 mg and prescribed propranalol for palpitations and VitD3 for severe deficiency. I felt I would never be well and had become a virtual recluse and had some very dark thoughts... However today I do feel quite a bit better, no where near how I used to feel but well enough to potter and go out again. I do think that my hyper had been coming on for at least 12 months and probably a lot longer than that. You need to try and take charge of your treatment, get copies of blood results and make notes of your symptoms and how you feel as I was advised to do. I do hope you feel a bit better soon
