Can anyone tell me if there hair loss or hair thinning began when they were hypothyridic or if they were hyperthyridic also, was that with Levo or NDT. Was it transitional and if so, what caused it to stop?

Yikes! Complicated question, LAHs! And my thyroid story is complicated, too.

well, having been hypo most of my life - although I Don't know for sure if it was always Hashi's - I noticed that my hair varied from very thick (during my second pregnancy I had to have it thinned out because it was much too thick for the hairdresser to do anything with) to very thin. There didn't seem to be any regular pattern to it.

I started Levo when I was 55. Hair-thinning got noticably worse!

Added T3 and it stopped, but the hair didn't regrow.

Started NDT and hair started growing, but everything else got worse!!!

Went onto T3 only and hair stopped regrowing but didn't fall out.

Got on to a very high dose of T3 but hair still not regrowing much.

Stopped all thyroid hormone replacement (for reasons I won't go into) for six months. Hair stable but thin.

Started T3 again and, a couple of months later, almost all my hair fell out in one go when I was washing it one day! Ughhhhhhhh!

So, now been settled on 75 mcg T3 for over a year. Hair would have fits and starts of growing and falling out.

Started taking iron tablets about 3 months ago - was already taking B vits, D3, magnesium etc - and now I can really see it growing back in. I can feel it with my fingers, little stubbly bits. Most satisfying. lol

I'm sure that doesn't help at all, but that's my hairy story. And all I can deduce from that is that hair needs hormones AND nutrients to grow. :)

Thanks GG very much, yes that does illuminate the fact that it is a complex process. I will have a good think about it and see if I can come to any conclusions - although yours seems to be very reasonable. Many thanks.

You're welcome. :)

Thank you for the info, will follow this up immediately.

Some information th at may be of interest regarding HAIR LOSS and the thyroid. I had my thyroid completely removed when I was 45 (I am now 72), almost immediately I lost all hair on my arms, legs, underarms which NEVER regrows but not my eyebrows. pubes or head and my period stopped then also but blood tests showed that I was not menopausal (even though I had a

miscarriage at 43). At present I am on 175 Levo and still loose hair on my head every day but fortunately although fair I still have a good head of hair. I have many of the Hypothyroid problems but no GP has ever suggested T3- hey ho.
