Just wondering whether this is just part and parcel or whether it just affects a minority?

Hello JodyPody,

This whole year I just haven't slept. ! ! .. well I must have slept a tiny bit but it feels like I never sleep. The scary bit is I feel OK as if I never need sleep.! !

I think it down to adrenal dysfunction as my cortisol levels are now too high after years of being too low.

In between hot flushes (menopause) and internal tremors ... There's not a lot of hope .. Lol.

I know others suffer insomnia due to low blood sugar issues when cortisol levels are too low, certain drugs side effects, or even over thyroid hormone medicated.

Although frustrating, I think the best thing is to go with it .... I read, meditate, look at the forum .... anything but get cross because that alone will stop me sleeping further.

Flower.

I'm sorry you're having problems and 'yes' it is common. It does resolve when you are on the correct dose of thyroid hormones.

It is one of the 300+ clinical symptoms. Excerpt:-

Then there are those who have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and treated with thyroid replacement medication, however they still suffer from many of the symptoms on this list. Their doctors have no idea the real reason for their ill health is the improperly treated hypothyroidism. They too are being prescribed multiple medications for conditions that could be treated by proper thyroid treatment. Others are mistakenly considered hypochondriacs and prescribed sleeping pills and anti-depressants by their doctors. Others are told their symptoms are just part of normal aging and shrugged off as unimportant. Doctors are relying solely on laboratory tests for diagnosis, not investigating fully the patient’s medical history, symptoms, family history and thorough physical exams. Does this sound like you? It may be time to change doctors.

I'm one of the lucky few that got my endo to prescribe armour but I can't seem to get the dose right. I tried upping from 2.25 to 2.5 cause of insomnia and constipation. I bought extra privately but this particular batch is making me feel really hot! Not in a good way 😀

Even if you feel really hot - did you check your temp to see if it had risen? I know hypo's temp is usually low anyway but should increase when on optimum but might never come back to 'normal'. Usually if on too much hormones and overdosed our pulse/temp would increase.

My temp was normal at between 36.5 and 36.8 dependant on time of day

How are you taking your dose of Armour? Once daily - Split throughout the day?.

I've always taken it once, in the morning and it's only recently the insomnia is back again.

This is a link and there's a hint re constipation on the page.

Maybe a very small increase in NDT would also help, bearing in mind I'm not medically qualified. Always being aware of how you 'feel' after each increase. It's easy to drop back to your previous dose.

Hi Shaws. Yes that's what I did. I increased from 2.25 to 2.5 but got very hot and felt desperate and lost. Weird. Couldn't focus. I've dropped back to 2 just to undo the damage and I may go to 2.25 again. I just can't seem to get the dose right

Sometimes when you get near to the 'optimum' just a tiny increase is best at one time and may be all that you require and it's also easier to drop down to the previous dose which might be the 'best' for you. Did you take your temp when you got very hot - and sometimes we get nervous in case we've overdone it. Did your pulse also rise?

I only checked my temp which was fairly normal at between 36.7 to 36.8. Didn't check my pulse. I've gone back down to 2.25 now taking 2 first thing and then chewing .25 in the afternoon so I don't bother about eating etc

It did affect me until I got my ndt high enough. I also need to split it am/pm if I don't I get insomnia again. Am also working to get vitamins balanced too and 5 Htp and magnesium helped me with mood and sleep too.

I tried to up my NDT but got too hot and felt plain odd. I'm taking a good quality b with magnesium plus ashwangae or whatever it's called. Still no sleep unless alcohol is involved.

sometimes we are just unlucky. However, I do find when my medication is slightly over-replaced that it affects my sleep- might be worth getting your bloods checked if you haven't recently

Yep over or under affects my sleep. Have you tried splitting your dose, morning / evening?

I've always taken one hit in the morning but it's only recently I've struggled. Been on armour since Feb.

For some I think it can be histamine overload as it seems to be linked to hypo especially when untreated or not optimally medicated.

Naturally there can be several reasons but low histamine diet is something worth to try as anyone can try that. In three weeks one should feel the difference.

For me it is cheese and chocolate which I never connected to histamine until I read about it. Cheese before bedtime and I will stay up all night.

I've not slept well for most of the 16 years I've taken Thyroxine. However, I've been taking some T3 for the last 6 weeks or so, and have slept better than I have in 20 years. It's a joy!!!
