Have been hypothyroid for 6months with very low iron too. On 125mcg and ferrous feritin.....and I feel so so sick all the time. It gets better if I eat sugar but that's not good for diet......can anyone help me?

Have you had your ferritin and hemoglobin tested recently. And yes, sugar consumption is a sort of 'pica' syndrome problem. Since it's been 6 months since you are taking the ferrous fumarate, possibly ask the doctor to test if you are indeed absorbing.

One thing you need to bear in mind: if you have Hashimoto's which is an auto-immune disease of the thyroid (and other things), it is possible you also have problems with gluten. If the small intestine is damaged from Coeliac, then iron absorption is compromised. Basically get checked initially for gluten antibodies. First. If no one wants to do it then go gluten free for a few months and see if you feel better.

Hi Hels,

I too have just started on ferrous ferritin and am feeling slightly nauseous but unfortunately that is one of the side effects. (I have been on thyroxin for 8 yrs so it's not that ). I've researched the iron tablet and it says if you get the sickness ask your Doctor to change tablet or have a weekly iron injection until iron levels are improving. Also taking vitamin c is supposed to help.

Hope you feel better soon

I found a way to avoid the nauseous feeling when taking my Ferrous Furmate.

I take my FF in between having a meal and a drink.

Some people have said that they do better (i.e. no or almost no side effects) from taking a Ferritin or Haem (also spelled Heme) iron supplement.

Such products are available from iHerb.com and Amazon.

Because they are absorbed by different mechanisms in the gut people might actually find they absorb more efficiently.
