Sammy, I'm so sorry you are finding out the hard way that conventional medicine has no idea how to deal with hypothyroidism. Personally i would rather take a natural desiccated thyroid hormone that has worked for a hundred years than a synthetic like levo. You have to be careful to raise the dose over several months so your body can get used to the idea of outside hormone as it also may still be producing or trying to produce hormone. The pituitary gland is also involved.

I'm not in the UK so others will have to tell you about Armour but I took it for many years and it is excellent. I would not reduce the levo unless there is very, very good reason and it should not be due to your TSH going too low. Find out why if you can and always ask for your test results.

Sammy, what are/were the horrible side effects? It's more than possible that you simply weren't on enough Levo, and that increasing it would have been a better answer...

Just wondering, before you set off down the self medicating (and self funding) path.

Poor you, sounds horrible. Did it take a while for you to get diagnosed? If it did, then unfortunately it will be a while before you feel lots better. Sometimes that means raising Levo very slowly (and trying different brands, in case it's the fillers in the tablets that are upsetting you). Sometimes the swap to NDT is the answer.

Hopefully folk have PM'd you with NDT sources, if not, please don't be afraid to ask again - at weekends posts do occasionally get missed.

Hi Sammy I had a TT in April. I was on Synthroid and when I was on 137mcg that is how I felt. Almost as though I couldn`t control my emotions. I believe I was Hyper. I am now on NatureThroid 65 2X a day and I am feeling pretty darn good. Except for some itching.

When I was first diagnosed with underactive thyroid I was put on 25ug T4 (levo), but was increasingly unwell, so after 6 weeks I stopped it and felt much better initially. Then I gradually went downhill, so after a few weeks my doc put me on T3 only (liothyronine) which I gradually increased. After another 2 months I had to see a different doc as mine was away, and the new doc insisted I go back to T4, which made me unwell after about 2 weeks, so I managed to get back on T3 for a while. I then had my nutritional supplements checked and was put back on T4 again which I was then able to tolerate better.

What I'm trying to say is (1) that our thyroid medication works better if our nutritional levels are adequate and (2) that some of us don't convert T4 to T3 properly so we gradually feel worse instead of better.

So do make sure your nutritional levels are good - it may help.

Since then I've gone on to try T4 +T3 combination and eventually onto NDT, where I started with Erfa, but now am on Nature-Throid. This does all take time and can't be rushed.

Best wishes.

Hi Sammy, what were you taking before the reduction? When did you have your last blood test? Do you have the results? If so, can you post them here - with ranges? Then people will be better able to help you. :)

Am reading an awful lot about NDT but that is something that has never been mentioned by my GP, in fact I only found out about it when I joined this group about a week ago. Is it something that only helps certain people or is it a tryer for everyone with thyroid problems?
