Hi I was diagnosed with overactive thyroid back in Dec 2010 with a result of 73. I tried PTU but even this would not bring my levels down. In the end after 2 years me and my consultant decided I would have radioactive therapy to remove the thyroid gland. I started on 75mg Levothyroxine. I have a healthy diet and go to the gym so I dont really put weight on. I do sometimes get moody and angry and this is not me as a person so get upset about this. Anyway I would like to know if there is any particular time I should take my meds. At present I take them in a morning around 7.30 with cod liver oil. Then 20 minutes later I have a fruit smoothie. Iv heard about nutrient absorbsion etc,am I doing this all wrong? I look forward to your reply :)

Welcome to the forum, Mtaylor0308.

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water on an empty stomach 1 hour before food and drink, or 2 hours after. Take it 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from iron, calcium, vitamin D and oestrogen.

Levothyroxine can be taken any time of day/night if you observe the above. Research has shown that taking Levothyroxine at bedtime can increase absorption.

I think you get the best results with trial and error. I too was overactive in 2006, after 3 years of carbimazole I had radioactive iodine treatment.

For the last few years I have been underactive and taking levothyroxine. I have tried taking it at lots of different times, I struggled for a couple of years to find what suited me best. I have discovered taking it before bed works for me, when I took it in the morning I just seemed to have less energy than ever.

Experts say there are optimum times but sometimes different things suit different people, I try to listen to my body and work it out. I also take different amounts of levothyroxine every other day, 100mg one day followed my 125mg the next.

It has taken me years to find what suits me best and it's still never perfect. I hope you find the best thing for you quicker than I did. My GP is fab and does understand that even when my bloods are in normal range it doesn't mean I will feel great so we go with how I am actually feeling and what my symptoms are.

Thank you for your reply. I had my meds last night before bed instead of yesterday morning, and I actually felt 10 times better at work yesterday. :)
