Do i have a right to see an endocrinologist, see if they can get to a point where symptoms are bearable, or is it purely up to the GP.

If they wont refer me, is there a list of private endocrinologists and how much is it likely to cost?

Hello Jacky,

Gp's have to refer a patient to get an appointment with a national health endo.

Private doctors/endos may have slightly different protocols but all would prefer a referral from your GP as medical history is so important and any advised/offered treatment would have to involve your GP's knowledge anyway.

Private fees obviously vary but most are about £200. Some endos will reduce fees for subsequent visits, some insist once you start private treatment you will be liable for all test costs.... . it is a mine field and very much down to the individual endo you see.

These costs can be discussed with the endos secretary before you were to commit to anything.

When I first met with mine I asked about on going tests and he agreed to ask my GP to conduct all bloods and refer me to other specialists for further investigations on the national health. .. I had obviously previously discussed this with my GP and he had agreed.

On a different health matter, in my haste, .... we paid to see a private neurologist who ordered several tests and an MRI .... of which we were responsible for all costs. The end result was inconclusive necessitating many further tests.. ! ! .. .. needless to say I am now on the national health waiting list to see another neurologist..... and not all doctors are happy with you to change over mid investigation.

Be sure to ask who would be liable for the costs of any ongoing treatment found to be necessary as a result of the private consultation you have sort.

You can receive a list of sympathetic endos/doctors whom members have had previous positive experiences with by emailing louise warvill.
