Could anybody tell me how long it will take before I feel any better, I started medication 3 weeks ago, but hardly get through my days, exhausted, an painful body ( day an night) even struggling with household jobs.
I am back at hospital next week, I presume to see if meds are working
Thank you

Thank you so much for your reply, hospital has put me oncarbimazole 20mg, I take 2 once a day, and propranolol 40mg, I take one 3 times daily.
My blood result are
Free T3 is 24.7, TPO is 4775, free T4 is 53.1with TSH <0.01.
ALT is 52 with CRP of 5
I'm sorry but all of the above means nothing to me.
I had 4 days last week when I didn't feel too bad, but since Saturday I feel lousy again, is it normal to feel slightly better, then go back and b poorly?
I have hyperthyroidism and it took 3.5 weeks for me to notice an improvement In my symptoms after starting on Carbimozole. It takes a while for your body to rid itself of the the excess thryroxin. It seems an endless wait, but you will soon start to notice a difference! Commiserations - I know how lousy you will be feeling.
Freddie,
I suffer hypothyroidism so can not give you my experiences but clarefrances has and maybe others will.
Your TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase) level is elevated at 4775 and would indicate Graves Auto Immune Disease.
Your TSH ( thyroid stimulating hormone) is very low because the pituitary gland is trying to compensate for the excess T3 and T4 hormones in the blood. It’ll stop producing TSH in an attempt to stop production of the thyroid hormones.
Yout T4 & T3 are both high because the antibody thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI) are misdirecting the thyroid to make too much T3 and T4.
Your thyroid meds should bring all hormones back into balance but this can take some weeks. Your symptoms may go up and down due to the high antibody level which will be attacking the thyroid gland. Symptoms will ease as antibody levels drops. Many members have found a gluten free diet has helped to help dampen immune responses and lower antibody levels.
If is helpful to include the ranges (numbers in brackets) in future postings of test results to enable members to use more precise readings.
Sorry that you are feeling so awful right now, but stick with the medication and you should begin to feel a little better in 3-4 weeks.
I also am hyperthyroid and it is a real roller-coaster condition (as is hypothyroid).
You will need to listen to your body and learn to be kind to yourself. Rest when you are having weary days and try not to do too much when you are feeling a better or else you will push yourself too much and suffer afterwards with ongoing tiredness.
It will improve but you have to be patient as it will take time.... sending a hug now.
Hi Freddy, took about 4wks for my symptoms to ease when I was hyper. I ached when on carbimazole - particularly my legs. You need to listen to your body and take it easy if you can. The other frustration can be family/friends etc understanding how you feel because you look 'normal'. Take care x
Hi Freddy, I'm in remission from Graves. I was diagnosed and started with 20mcg carb on 30/11/12. I can remember still feeling dreadful through December. I had a blood test after four weeks on 20mcg and my T4 had improved but my TSH was still exactly the same. I got a letter from my endo telling me to double the carb which I did for another two months and it was the end of February before I got to the hospital for my first endo visit. I had certainly started to feel better by then but I was also hypo and shortly after I started on 50 mcg levothyroxine along with my 40mcg carb my hair started falling out and my nails disintegrated. So I would think you might feel rough for at least a month from starting your carb but I'm not medically qualified - that's just how it was for me. Also because I have asthma I couldn't take beta blockers so I just had to wait for the palpitations to sort themselves out.
As soon as I started taking carb my pharmacist told me to take vitamin C so I always took 1000mxg plus zinc.
I am older - I must have been 64 when I developed Graves. I found I was terribly tired and as I was lucky enough for my family to have left home I just gave in and got as much sleep/rest as I could. My poor husband did most of the shopping and cooking because I felt so awful. Once I started to feel better I still took life very easy and did the bare minimum around the house. In fact I was quite selfish and onLy did things I wanted to do - no more doing things to please other people. Trouble in or it wad in my case, I lost so much weight that I looked great so although you are really very ill, you look ok or in my case better than ok.
Hopefully you will feel a lot better soon - in the beginning I didn't think I would ever feel normal again but I'm fine now and have been in remission since November 2013.
Make sure your vitamin D and B12, ferritin and folates are high in their ranges too because that will help your thyroid.
