An interesting article on Iodine
Very, very interesting! I had heard of the patch test of iodine to indicate thyroid problems before so was waiting to see if that theory was right or not - but the written research gets much more interesting than that! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks GG.
The "test" of putting iodine on the skin to watch how fast it disappears is not an indicator of anything.
I so wish that those who claim that the patch test has any relevance or usefulness would at the very least produce some evidence.
Exactly. It confirms what I've heard many, many times, from many different sources.
Fascinating ,especially the history. Good to see you back on form GG.
GG, interesting. I like the concept of bottom up healing of skin. May try applying iodine if I get chilblains again.
Yes, that is promising, isn't it. I'm trying to find something to try it on, but perfect as I am, that's proving difficult! lol
My husband had a large skin tag on his neck. Topical application of iodine resulted in it healing from the bottom up and the tag simply fell off.
We-ell, I had the same, and it just fell off after I tied a length of cotten round the base. So...
Yes, but my husband's was large and there was a significant portion, rather like a big mole, that was raised up from the skin but not loose like the tag part. All of it came away after the iodine and the skin underneath was perfectly healed. I was just agreeing that iodine does heal from beneath.
Regards, Katy
I recently applied iodine to a long-standing lesion on my back that had all the appearances of a basal cell carcinoma. Obviously I hadn't had it biopsied but it wasn't any other type of lesion. After a week of 4 times a day iodine it was gone.
Very interesting - how much iodine do people recommend? Diluted?
I Don't understand your question, Mark. If you're talking about using it on your skin, then it's all explained in the article. But if you're talking about taking it orally, then I wouldn't recommend you take any at all. Certainly not without getting tested for deficiency. If you are taking thyroid hormone replacement, then you are already taking a form of iodine. You probably Don't need much more than that. Well, that's my opinion, anyway. Others will probably differ.
Ah sorry I should have been clearer! Yes I'm interested in using it on the skin, but I couldn't see anywhere in the article that mentioned how much iodine to use (other than apply x number of times per day).
If I'm looking for benefit from (e.g.) scarring or skin healing, should I use a 12% solution and just apply drops directly onto the skin? How many drops is too much? Or is 12% solution too strong, would I need to water it down?
Well, I'm really no expert, because after some very unfortunate expériences, I avoid iodine like the plague. But I got the impression from the article that he just used it from the bottle - didn't dilute it at all - and just slapped it on generously. And went on using it for as long as it took. Certainly, according to the story about Fanny Gordon, she didn't skimp on it at all.
But, as I said, I'm no expert - and I Don't think there are many experts in that kind of use of iodine - I'm just Learning, too.

Hi Mark
I used Lugol's Iodine Solution 15% Bob's Best brand. You can't overuse iodine on the skin. After using it for about a week on my skin lesion, the area of the lesion and the skin around it became scaly and rough and then I stopped putting it on.
Normal skin there now and really fast action.
I think you have to try it and see, but if skin looks inflamed or otherwise becoming damaged then stop.
I am not comfortable with your statement: You can't overuse iodine on the skin.
Various forms of skin irritation can and do occur from use of iodine.
Absolutely. And Hashi's people, especially, can become allergic to iodine. It burns like hell when it touches your skin. I was like that a while ago. But when a nurse accidentally got some on my skin in hospital, it didn't burn at all. Don't know what to make of that...
Thanks GG have started looking at site and saved it to show endo, hope she doesn't say I'm only here to discuss your cirrhosis! I need a better qualified Thyroid Consultant than one I saw July, if endo thinks I'm barking up wrong tree with gland removal. If I am I'll let you all know, and apologise!
