Hypo and rib pains/aches/tenderness...??

Hi all, I've been on a 75mcg dose of Levo for just over a year. My hypo was picked up during a routine blood test to discover my lack of periods (age 44).

I've had several blood tests in the last year and I am within range.

Appx 3 months ago I walked in to a door handle (twice). I had no bruise but days later noticed my ribs felt bruised and tender along with a very sore spot in my side where the handle had dug in. Weeks later this ache/pain was no better so visited my GP. She's been fab and I've had lots of tests and an abdominal US. All clear bar a contracted gall bladder which she didn't seem concerned about.

Now, I'm a bit of a worrier and have imagined all sorts (particularly the 'C' word)...I can't believe that walking into a door handle 3 months ago would result in this pain.

It's like I've been hit on the side with a cricket bat! My only other symptoms besides the aching ribs and tender spot is that I am often stiff after sitting or when I first get out of bed (as I said, I'm only 44!)

The ache is throughout the entire outside of my right rib cage - it's definitely worse if I'm more active during the day. Painkillers or heat don't touch it.

Does anyone have any ideas please? Is it something that could be put down to hypo?

I'm waiting for a referral to surgical outpatients as my GP is at a loss.

Thanks in anticipation xx

Are your vitamin D levels ok. I had rib pain, like the underwire of a bra digging in which has gone now my vit D levels are good. My daughter who is not hypothyroid also had very very low vit D levels and the same pain which has gone now her levels have been corrected.

I can testify to this too - I suffered from rib pain off and on for ages but once I got my vitamin D deficiency sorted out the problem disappeared.

mrspinkrat,

Are you adequately medicated on thyroid hormone replacement?

If there is an imbalance it can affect every part of your body including not only making pain worse but stopping healing happening.

If you have recent blood test results, post in a new question , complete with ranges for members to comment.

Thank you - I was advised that I was vitamin D deficient but nothing major and was told to take a supplement which I do. However, it's only a tiny dose. What amount should I be looking at guys? And would it really cause the pain and aches I describe? Cricket bat severity??!!

Hi it's refreshing to find this feed and your experience I've currently been taking levothyroxine now for just over two weeks for a few years I've been trying to manage my thyroid through diet and exercise but this last year the year if covid has been impossible to stay on track and my tsh levels got to 39 but I went to the doctors scared because like you I've had a pain in My right ribs and tender spot and just under my shoulder since January I did move a patient's bed sheet at work the patient is mostly bed bound and it's really bad as she's a large woman and you have to try and change the bed with her on it . And during trying to pull the sheet through I had a sharp pain go through my shoulder ribs back arm it was so bad I had to stop . I've had this pain now on and off mostly on since January so I went thinking the worst had loads of tests I knew my thyroid was bad in August at levels of 13 so it is my own fault for thinking I didn't need medication and could handle it I did for quite a few years I lost weight and was doing well but with the gyms shut and the state of the world it's been harder to stay on top of it . I've gained 20 pounds in a year and now I know I have alot of work to do , had your pain gone now as I see this feed is from 6 years ago , my back pain has gone and the rib pain has improved but it's still there still worries me even though I had full bloods done . I did cry to my doctor when she told me I said to her I thought it was going to be something really bad , I'll have my bloods done again in 3 weeks and I think they will increase the dose to 75mg currently I'm on 50mg I've felt abit better but today's been a bad day where I'm quite tired and my ribs and shoulder are bugging me , I hope it is alot better for you now , and the medication is working for you , thankyou Natasha

Hi Natasha

I don't know if you'll see this. I'm the OP but had to create a new account as the email associated with my original account no longer exists.

But here I am years later with still the exact same symptoms.

I no longer fear it to be something sinister as I've had it so long but I still have no answers.

I have ribcage pain permanently, its constantly tender and I stiffen up after any amount of exercise or if I sit or lie for any length of time.

Over the years it has been suggested I have Hashimotos (never followed up), psoriatic arthritis (at a 5 minute rheumatology appointment where she looked at my HANDS) and fibromyalgia (because they either don't have a clue or can't be bothered to investigate any further)

How are you getting on?

Wow! Ive been having the exact same thing happen to me. The rib pain, being active worsening it, heat and painkillers dony help (heat makes it worse for me). The rib pain today was so bad that I started sobbing as work. The rib pain comes and goes.

I also have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I'm going to get a thyroid panel done this week.

I have also been told I have a vitamin D deficiency in the past, i'll be sure to bring it up at my appointment this week.
